Short of melting a hard drive, it is exceedingly difficult to erase data permanently. Even when written and overwritten to a CD or DVD.

 

I messed up writing to a CD-RW disc once and sent it off to have data recovered. I got sent back TWO discs full of data!

Your post just reminded me of when some programmer I met once said that he could nuke a hard drive with 18 characters of code. When I asked for the info he refused. I think the programming language he mentioned was fortran.
