Malaysian PM Resigns, Says he Won’t Work with Kleptocrats

Only 17 months into office, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced his resignation on Monday after losing majority support in parliament following months of political turmoil and apparent pressure from current and former officials accused of graft.

“I will never work with kleptocrats, interfere with the independence of the judiciary, and turn my back against the Federal Constitution just to stay in power,” Muhyiddin said in a public address on Monday.

The comment has been interpreted as a dig at a group of high-ranking government officials in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party who are known collectively as the “court cluster.”

Several influential members of the group, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak and party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, are facing graft charges. They were among those who withdrew support for Muhyiddin earlier in the month.

Muhyiddin held onto shaky political support from the start of his term as prime minister in March of 2020, but his razor thin majority margin dissolved earlier last week amid political chaos. COVID-19 cases in Malaysia have skyrocketed this summer, so the public has grown increasingly dissatisfied with the government’s pandemic response.

The palace confirmed that Sultan Abdullah of Pahang accepted the letter of resignation from Muhyiddin and the rest of the cabinet on Monday.

No clear successor has emerged yet, and Muhyiddin will remain in a caretaker position until the next Prime Minister is appointed. That means that he will effectively continue to manage government affairs, but he’s not expected to implement significant new policies.

Muhyiddin, who is 74, was once a member of the UMNO party but soon departed for the Malaysian United Indigenous Party amid the notorious 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case that implicated dozens of Goldman Sachs business executives and corrupt government officials, including Razak, in a looting and laundering scheme that shook up the financial world.

Muhyiddin is the shortest serving prime minister in the country’s history.

‘Freedom’: Mass Protests Erupt Against COVID-19 Vaccine Passports in France

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets across France over the weekend to demonstrate against the government’s COVID-19 vaccine passport mandate that prevents unvaccinated individuals from entering restaurants, bars, and using long-distance travel.

France’s Interior Ministry told Reuters that 215,000 people are estimated to have protested, which is down slightly from the 237,000 people who demonstrated a week before that.

Protesters often chanted “freedom,” “pass = apartheid,” “take back your pass,” referring to the vaccine passport. Some French citizens told news outlets that they partook in the demonstrations because the COVID-19 passports limit their freedoms and is a way to segregate society for political purposes, not for health reasons.

Crowds were seen marching in Paris, Nice, Marseille, and other cities.

Weeks ago, the French Parliament passed the COVID-19 health pass law, requiring citizens to show the pass in public areas, proving they’ve been vaccinated or recently tested negative for the virus. The country’s top court earlier this month upheld the law as well as a law mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for all health workers.

And while some media outlets claimed the protests were part of the “anti-vax” movement, many French demonstrators have said they support the vaccines but not restrictions.

A court has found it ‘hard to understand’ why a ‘privileged’ cardiologist was caught with more than 4000 ‘abhorrent’ child abuse files on his iPhone.

It is “hard to understand” why a “privileged” South Australian cardiologist was found with “deviant, distressing and disturbing” child exploitation material on his mobile phone and disturbing sex messages, a court has heard.

Andrew Douglas McGavigan, 49, was arrested on December 7, 2020 after SA Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET) officers raided his Hawthorn home and found the abusive material on his iPhone X.

His mobile had a user-controlled encrypted cloud storage app installed, where 9235 images or videos had been downloaded over a 17-day period from September 22 to October 9 last year.

Only 4061 files were able to be examined by officers.

Adelaide District Court heard the ”predominant” amount depicted abusive material.

Officers also discovered messages between McGavigan and other people discussing engaging in sexual activities with children in Thailand via messaging apps Skype and Line between May 31 and December 6, 2020.

The heart surgeon later pleaded guilty to one count each of accessing and possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service in a harassing or offensive way.

McGavigan was on Monday sentenced to three years and four months’ imprisonment with a non parole period of 12 months.

Judge Julie McIntyre noted the defendant had no prior criminal history or drug or alcohol dependency and believed he had reasonable prospects for rehabilitation, was remorseful and unlikely to reoffend.

She also said his early guilty pleas, prior good character, financial loss, strong family support and active engagement with treatment were the reasons for his “slightly lower” non parole period.

The judge also noted McGavigan’s work made a large contribution to the community, but said he “took on too much” which “took its toll” on his physical and mental health.

She said it was “so much harder to understand” why a person of his calibre would participate in such “abhorrent” behaviour.

“On the face of things you led a charmed and privileged life,” Judge McIntyre said.

“Why would a successful family man who devoted his life to medicine seek out this particularly abhorrent material?

“Until these offences came to light, you were highly respected for both your professional skill and non-clinical areas.”

The court heard McGavigan likely suffered a chronic adjustment disorder with depressive moods at the time of his offending; but the judge said it “barely provided an excuse” and the motivation behind his offending remained unexplained.

She said McGavigan was “persistent” when communicating via the online messaging apps, asking if the recipient could source a young female in exchange for money, or whether they could portray as a child for online sexual role-play.

The court also heard the images saved in McGavigan’s Mega account were “explicit” and “abrupt”.

“The material I saw was deviant, distressing and disturbing, with many of the children involved being subjected to violent forms of abuse … those children showed obvious fear and distress,” Judge McIntyre said.

“By accessing and possessing this material, you encouraged and added to the abuse of these unfortunate children.”

Bob Dylan sued for allegedly sexually abusing 12-year-old girl in 1965

Legendary crooner Bob Dylan plied a 12-year-old girl with drugs and alcohol before sexually abusing her at his Chelsea Hotel apartment in 1965, an explosive new lawsuit alleges.

The “Blowin’ in the Wind” musician used his star status to groom, gain the trust of and control the victim “as part of his plan to sexually molest and abuse” her, according to the Manhattan Supreme Court papers, which only identify the plaintiff as “J.C.”

“Bob Dylan, over a six-week period between April and May of 1965 befriended and established an emotional connection with the plaintiff,” say the papers, which were filed late Friday on behalf of J.C., now a 68-year-old woman in Greenwich, Conn.

The suit alleges that Dylan — whose given name is Robert Allen Zimmerman — established the “connection” to “lower [J.C.’s] inhibitions with the object of sexually abusing her, which he did, coupled with the provision of drugs, alcohol and threats of physical violence, leaving her emotionally scarred and psychologically damaged to this day.”

The alleged abuse by the now-81-year-old “Like a Rolling Stone” singer and songwriter occurred multiple times, and some of the incidents took place at the famed Chelsea Hotel, the suit claims.
