Washington Monument closed after lightning strike

The Washington Monument was closed Monday after being struck the day before by lightning.

Officials with the National Park Service said in a Twitter message that the popular tourist site was closed โ€œas we repair damage to the electronic access system caused by Sunday morningโ€™s lightning strike.โ€

Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said Monday that the lightning hit around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and that no one was hurt.

Itโ€™s a new day in America, but Trumpism and white supremacy are not dead. Letโ€™s not forget that when George W. Bush left office, many said he was the worst President ever, and acted as though leadership like his would never return to the White House. I know Bush now espouses bipartisan civility, but he was a criminal deserving of impeachment, and yet we moved on. โ€œIt canโ€™t get worse than George W. Bush,โ€ we said. But it did get worse than George W. Bush with the election of Donald Trump. And I am saddened to say that it could even get worse than Donald Trump in the future if we repeat the mistakes of the past. Fellow Democrats: I urge you to keep this in mind over the next two to four years. Our democracy is at stake.
