>why did the plane tip over? were they trying to turn it around?

Asymmetric thrust caused by right engine failure/fire.

This would cause the plane to yaw to the right causing loss of lift on the right wing resulting in the plane rolling to the right.

As a transport plane the three crew members would not necessarily have had parachutes.

To bailout they would have to get out of the cockpit and back to a side door in the main cabin area.

As a prototype plane their main instinct may well have been to try and save the plane rather than themselves.>14376188

The plane is a turboprop and these use the propellers to help brake and slow the plane and shorten the landing run once they are on the runway.

It is possible (it has happened before with other planes) that the prop ran out of control and into the reverse thrust brake position causing the engine to fail.

This is a little like driving your car forward at speed and then slamming it into reverse gear.
