US President Joe Biden is facing dropping approval ratings as he deals with a backlash from both sides of the political aisle for his handling of the military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Fewer than half of Americans surveyed approve of the president’s performance, according to a poll conducted by Rasmussen, the results of which were published on Tuesday, and 54% disapprove. Among that majority, 45% “strongly disapprove”. Only 27% expressed “strong” approval of the Democrat.

Tracking from Rasmussen and other surveys shows Biden has been facing declining public approval ratings for weeks. Criticism of his performance in the White House has meanwhile reached a new level, with both liberal and conservative critics labeling the ongoing Afghanistan withdrawal a failure.

As part of a process that could lead to a takeover of elections in Georgia's most populous county, the Georgia State Board of Elections announced plans to appoint a review panel this week under a provision in the state's new election law, the Associated Press reported.

The state's Republican lawmakers pointed to the new law last month when requesting that the board appoint the performance review board for an investigation of Fulton County's handling of elections. The panel will be appointed during the board's Wednesday meeting.

Republicans said they are concerned about carelessness in the administration of Fulton County's elections and that a review board is needed to assess whether local officials are following state voting laws.

Once the State Election Board receives such a request, it has to appoint a review board within 30 days. The review board is to be composed of "three competent persons," including an employee of the elections division of the secretary of state's office and two "local election officials."

The review board is tasked with conducting a complete and thorough investigation into the competency in the maintenance and operation of election equipment, the administration and oversight of registration and elections and compliance with state law and regulations. Then the board is to issue a report with evaluations and recommendations.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo filed for retirement benefits on Tuesday, following his decision to resign last week amid a sexual-harassment scandal.

Officially filing for retirement sets Cuomo up to receive a monthly pension payment from the state after more than a decade in public office. The three-term Democrat could be eligible to receive at least $50,000 a year in pension benefits from the state, according to the Empire Center, an Albany watchdog group. The payment could potentially be revoked if he is convicted of a felony, the group said.
