Agreed, but the mountains of Afghanistan has no transport system. And those metals are not dug up so much as they are processed from dirt. Compare that to sucking them up off the sea floor in the south china sea and elsewhere that is easy for China to get to.

Interesting themes in this movie. Humanity wears trackers and is basically forced to stay indoors while the Robot Overlords do robot things. Kids figure out a way to defeat the trackers. Human controllers used to 'manage' the human population in a friendly way.
