I've always said this is in part due to Feminism and women wanting "equality". This movement essentially doubled the workforce, doubled demand for college degrees, which halved wages (two parents needed to work often)…college costs have syrocketed, despite being not for profit and exceeding inflation.
Whatever side you are on doesn't matter. It's simple mathematics. Not saying there aren't other factors (corp tax rates, banking deregulations, greed, technology etc also contributed) .
