During Keri Russell's recent guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she exhibited a fantastic example of an often misunderstood nonverbal tell. The Actor was describing her difficult interaction with Bear Grylls - and Keri Russell (beginning at 1:08) said, "… I had to do so fucking much …".
Immediately after this profanity, during 1:12, the co-star of The Americans displayed a "Tongue Jut" - and more specifically, a "Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a very different meaning). This body language moment is captured below.
A loose tongue jut indicates the thought-emotion of "I've been caught" or "I've been bad" (Navarro). When coincident with a sincere smile, laughter, or blushing - it will also transmit a self-deprecating type quality - as is seen this scenario.
It's fascinating to note, that although she's an accomplished actor, when Keri Russell is just being Keri Russell - she is no better at suppressing her nonverbal signals than you or me (or Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, etc., etc.).
