Current situation in Sydney. We are banned from travelling further than 5km from our homes, playgrounds are shut, police helicopters patrol the skies day and night, the government is asking its residents to report people breaking the health orders.
About a month ago, approximately 50,000 took to the streets of the city to protest. Police were completely taken off guard by the amount of people who showed up and were hugely outnumbered. They had no choice but to let the protest take place, and as you'd expect there was violence between police and protestors at the end.
There were rumours circulating that there was going to be a second protest the weekend after, but this time police took action. On the morning of the supposed next rally, they set up road blocks on all major roads leading in and out of the CBD and were checking every single car to see where they were going. They cancelled all trains and buses to the CBD. They banned Uber drivers from taking passengers into the CBD.
This weekend there are real rallies planned in every city around Australia with Sydney and Melbourne both currently in stage 4 lockdown. The police will no doubt use these same tactics again on the weekend, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.
