The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.

“Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases,” said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. “Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages.”

Stone, a veteran Republican operative and self-described “dirty trickster”, and Jones, founder of a conspiracy-driven radio show and webcast, are both allies of Trump and had been involved in pro-Trump events in Washington on Jan. 5, the day before the riot.

Hang Seng Tumbles Into Bear Market After China New Data Privacy Law Sends Tech Stocks Plunging

Hong Kong stocks tumbled into a bear market, with the Hang Seng index sliding more than 20% from it February high on Friday after Beijing approved a new privacy law to prevent data collection by domestic technology companies.

China's most powerful legislative body, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, passed the Personal Information Protection Law that will go into effect on Nov.1, according to FT. The move sent tech stocks plunging and leaving investors bewildered over the intensity of Beijing's regulatory crackdown that has slammed countless sectors.

The full text of the law has yet to be released, but it will affect how domestic technology giants collect and process sensitive personal data of users. For years, domestic companies data-mined users with limited regulation, fueling a black market for personal data.

The report gave little detail on the contents of the law but said it would clarify how sensitive personal data could be processed, require internet platforms to establish "robust personal information protection compliance systems" and stressed that companies "must not excessively collect personal information". An earlier draft of the law substantially curtailed Chinese companies' ability to harvest data without users' consent and imposed fees of up to Rmb50m ($7.7m) or 5 per cent of annual revenue for serious violations. -FT

The new law unleashed fresh turmoil in Chinese tech stocks. Alibaba sank to another record low in Hong Kong on Friday, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 2.5%. The moves added to a wave of selling in the industry Thursday after China said it was studying proposals to further ensure the rights of drivers who work for online companies and to step up oversight of the live streaming industry.

“If you see the numbers of issues surrounding the tech sector - antitrust, how they deal with workers’ rights and with the gaming sector, all these issues require a bit more clarity in terms of where the regulators are going,” Tai Hui, chief Asia market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, told Bloomberg Television. “What would we consider to be the fair value of these companies?”

On Friday, the Hang Seng Tech index of China's largest internet and e-commerce stocks, fell 2.5% and has now halved its gains since its mid-February peak.

US cops served over 20,000 ‘invasive’ geofence warrants targeting users by location data in last 3 years, Google report shows

Google has revealed that over a quarter of all data request warrants it gets from US authorities involve identifying people by location history. These orders, which pinpoint devices near a crime scene, have been called “invasive.”

The so-called ‘geofence warrants’ allow law enforcement agencies to specify area and timeframe and have the tech giant gather information, including names and other details, about persons of interest in that window – from location information recorded by apps and services like Google Maps.

As part of its latest transparency report, the tech giant on Thursday revealed that it received more than 20,000 geofence warrants in the US between 2018 and 2020. It was the first time Google disclosed the volume of these controversial requests, having resisted demands to do so in the past.

Noting that these warrants are only “one subcategory” of the search warrant requests the company gets, Google noted it had “seen a rise” in the number of warrants ordering it to identify users by location info since 2018. That year, it received 982 geofence warrants, and the figure spiked to 11,554 in 2020.

As well, the vast majority of such warrants – to the tune of nearly 96% – are obtained by local and state law enforcement bodies, while federal agencies account for the remainder. Authorities in California made the most information requests between the years specified in the report.

Also known as ‘reverse-location’ warrants, geofence orders make use of the vast amounts of location data Google collects as part of its advertising business in order to send targeted ads to users based on geographic data.

In 2019, it emerged that a Google database called Sensorvault stored location data harvested from “at least hundreds of millions of devices worldwide” that run on Android OS, use Google apps, or even ran a Google search. Law enforcement has accessed this data in the past.

In 2018, the Associated Press reported that Google could still collect people’s locations even when they have “paused” location tracking or opted out of recording “time-stamped location data” in their device settings or on Google services like Maps and Photos.

A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company had “developed a process specifically for these requests that is designed to honor our legal obligations while narrowing the scope of data disclosed.”

More Than Half of Israeli COVID-19 Patients Vaccinated as ‘Breakthrough Cases’ Rise

In Israel’s COVID-19 wards, nearly 60 percent of the country’s 514 patients hospitalized with severe or critical CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus symptoms are fully vaccinated, according to an Aug. 16 report.

The figures were reported as doctors are continually learning which vaccinated patients are most vulnerable to severe illness, amid growing concerns about instances of the COVID-19 vaccines providing less protection against the worst forms of the disease.

“There are so many breakthrough infections that they dominate, and most of the hospitalized patients are actually vaccinated,” said Uri Shalit, a bioinformatician at the Israel Institute of Technology, Science reported.

For the majority of patients experiencing breakthrough infections, about 87 percent were 60 or older and received two vaccine doses at least five months ago. The findings show that “breakthrough cases” are not a rare event as the term implies.

Noa Eliakim-Raz, the chief of the COVID-19 ward at Rabin Medical Centre in Petach Tikva, said the majority of hospitalized vaccinated patients are unhealthy, immobile and already required nursing care prior to infection.

Israel is among the world’s highest vaccination levels, with some 5.4 million people—or 78 percent of those 12 and older—fully vaccinated. The vast majority received the Pfizer shot. The country is, however, showing one of the highest infection rates in the world, potentially a sign of waning vaccine immunity as the Delta variant of the CCP virus spreads.

Salvini Against Welcoming ‘Potential Terrorists’ from Afghanistan

Populist Italian senator Matteo Salvini said that while he would consider allowing some refugees to Italy from Afghanistan, he was against opening the gates to thousands of “potential terrorists”.

Salvini, the leader of the League and former Italian interior minister, stated that some refugees should be allowed into the country, saying: “Afghanistan: humanitarian corridors for women and children in danger, certainly yes. Open doors for thousands of men, including potential terrorists? Absolutely not.”

Salvini’s comments have been contrasted by those of Enrico Letta, leader of the left-wing Democratic Party (PD), who has called for a “national mobilisation” to help refugees fleeing Afghanistan after the country fell to Taliban forces over the weekend, Il Giornale reports.

“We support Afghan society, its evolution, and women and men who do not want to go back to the Middle Ages. We are there,” Letta said.

Salvini has also been critical of the response of U.S. President Joe Biden to the scenes unfolding in Afghanistan, stating that Biden’s Monday speech was “very bad”.

The call to welcome potentially thousands of Afghan migrants comes as Italy has been inundated with tens of thousands of illegals travelling from North Africa in the last several months.

Over the last year, Italy has seen nearly 50,000 migrants arrive, up 128 per cent from the previous period. The vast majority, 82.6 per cent, have been from autonomous boat landings in places such as the island of Lampedusa and the mainland of Sicily.

Since Matteo Salvini left his post as interior minister in 2019, the country has seen a 673 per cent increase in illegal migrant arrivals.

Another major issue for Italy has been the lack of deportations of illegals, failed asylum seekers, and those denied residency.

In 2020 alone, just one in ten migrants were deported — 3,351 people in total. Despite the relatively small number, the deportations cost Italian taxpayers €4.68 million (£3.97m/$5.52m).

White House Walks Back Biden's Statement About Defending Taiwan, Says He Misspoke

A senior Biden administration official said Thursday that American policy on Taiwan has not changed despite Joe Biden appearing to suggest the United States would defend the island if it were attacked.

In an ABC Interview, Biden grouped Taiwan in with countries that the U.S. is committed to defending.

“They are…entities we’ve made agreements with based on not a civil war they’re having on that island or in South Korea, but on an agreement where they have a unity government that, in fact, is trying to keep bad guys from doing bad things to them,” Biden said.

“We made a sacred commitment to Article 5 that if in fact anyone were to invade or take action against our NATO allies, we would respond. Same with Japan, same with South Korea, same with – Taiwan. It’s not even comparable to talk about that.”

In case you are unfamiliar, Article 5 is an agreement which states that an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all.

As reported by Reuters, a senior Biden official said the policy has not changed, however, and Biden simply misspoke.

Indeed, the U.S. is required by law to provide Taiwan with the necessary means to defend itself, but has followed a policy of “strategic ambiguity” on whether it would intervene to protect the island if there were a Chinese attack.

Bonnie Glaser, a Taiwan expert at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, called Biden’s apparent mistake “unfortunate.”

“The U.S. had an Article 5 commitment to Taiwan from 1954 to 1979. The Biden administration isn’t considering returning to that commitment, as indicated by public statements by Kurt Campbell.”

He was arrested following an investigation by detectives from North Shore Police Area Command into breaches of Public Health Orders, including travelling from Queensland to Sydney and his involvement in planning an unauthorised protest for this weekend.

The Victorian man appeared at Hornsby Local Court today (Friday 20 August 2021) and pleaded guilty to four counts of not comply with noticed direction re s 7/8/9 – COVID-19, encourage the commission of crimes, and false representation resulting in police investigation.

He was subsequently sentenced to a maximum of eight months in prison, with non-parole period of three months.

Angela Merkel meets Vladimir Putin in Russia for showdown over imprisonment of Alexei Navalny on anniversary of notorious nerve agent attack

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow today for a showdown over the imprisonment of Alexei Navalny, a year after he was poisoned with a nerve agent.

Merkel blames the poison attack on the Kremlin and has called for Navalny's release since he was jailed in February, weeks after his return from Germany, where he received life-saving treatment. Putin denies the poisoning.

The pair are also expected to discuss Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the simmering war in eastern Ukraine and the authoritarian crackdown in Russian-allied Belarus.

In what will be Merkel's final visit to Russia, her aides have made clear that the timing of the meeting is not accidental.

'Yes, it is the anniversary of the poison attack on Mr Navalny,' her spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday.

'Our demands have still not been met,' Seibert said, adding that the case was 'unresolved' and had put a 'heavy burden' on relations between the two countries.

Merkel, who will travel to Russia's rival Ukraine after visiting Putin, is also expected to discuss major international issues with the Kremlin chief, who infrequently receives Western visitors in Moscow.

Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany, and Putin, a former KGB agent stationed there, speak each other's languages.

During the chancellor's 16 years in power, the pair always kept a dialogue despite strained relations, dampened by issues ranging from alleged cyberattacks to the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria.

Merkel visited Navalny when he was treated at the Charite hospital in Berlin following the near-fatal poisoning.

Navalny is now held in a maximum security prison colony in Pokrov, 100km (60 miles) east of Moscow.

This month he was charged with new crimes that could prolong his jail time by three years. If found guilty, he could only be released after 2024, the year Russia is scheduled to hold a presidential election.

Seibert said Navalny had been 'wrongly' imprisoned.

Navalny's movement has faced unprecedented pressure ahead of September parliamentary polls in Russia, in which Putin's United Russia party is expected to struggle.

His organisation was banned as 'extremist' and his allies have faced criminal charges, forcing some to leave Russia.

Barrett rejects bid to stop Obama library construction

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett denied a last-minute petition seeking to halt construction of an Obama Foundation library on Chicago's South Side.

The court's website indicated on Friday that Barrett rejected a bid from Chicago-based organizations and individuals that said the construction should be halted on environmental grounds.

Barrett handles emergency matters emanating from Illinois. She had the option to act on the petition herself or refer it to other justices.

The advocacy group Protect Our Parks and several other plaintiffs claimed that federal, state and local governments illegally segmented the project into smaller pieces in order to evade a full assessment of its environmental impacts.

They also argued that authorities ignored the possibility of using an alternate site to the planned location in Jackson Park. The parks group has said the library should be set in Washington Park a few miles away.

The petitioners' co-counsel Michael Rachlis indicated in a statement that the organizations would continue to fight the project in lower courts.

"Today's Supreme Court decision is disappointing, but not surprising. We still believe that preserving the status quo is fundamental to preventing irreparable harm in Jackson Park. Nonetheless, our core arguments seek to protect the long-term environmental and historical resources in Jackson Park, and we look forward to presenting our evidence and these arguments in the appellate and district court in the coming weeks,” Rachlis said.

The Supreme Court petition was submitted on Monday — the same day construction on the project began.

It came after both a rejection from a lower court and a previous failure at the Supreme Court level to block construction of the library on different legal grounds.

The structure, called the Obama Presidential Center, is expected to feature a museum and library, as well as gardens and a playground.

Watchdog group requests AG Garland say if he'll extend Durham probe, with funding to end next month

Funding for the probe expires Sept. 30, the end of fiscal 2021.

The government watchdog group Empower Oversight is asking the Justice Department whether Attorney General Merrick Garland will allow Special Counsel John Druham’s Russia collusion probe to continue and provide funding for it in the fast-approaching, new fiscal year.

"Under the regulations governing the special counsel, it is up to the attorney general to decide whether to allow the investigation to continue into a new fiscal year and whether to approve the budget necessary for it to do so,” the group wrote in its Freedom of Information Act request.

The group suggested its concern about the roughly 10-month-long probe by Durham, a former U.S. attorney, into the handling of the 2016 Russia investigation by law enforcement and intelligence agencies are based on previous statements by Garland and the department.

"At his confirmation hearing, when asked whether he would commit to providing Special Counsel Durham with the time and budget needed to complete the investigation, Attorney General Garland failed to do so," the group also wrote.

"Similarly, the Justice Department has failed to respond to recent requests by Congress and the media to clarify whether the Attorney General has decided to allow the Special Counsel’s investigation to continue beyond the end of this fiscal year or approved a budget for the next fiscal year. As the end of this fiscal year, September 30, gets closer and closer, these issues become more pressing."

The probe has reportedly so far cost at least $1.5 million.

The Russia collusion probe has raised numerous concerns including the FBI’s handling of an interview with then-National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the U.S. Intelligence community surveillance efforts and a dossier on President Trump 2016 presidential campaign, of which Flynn was a member.

The group argues the Durham probe is "of vital importance to the American people, and the people deserve answers from the Justice Department to determine if any actions have been taken to undermine the investigation’s integrity."

The group also vowed to take the matter to court if the department fails to promptly respond to the FOIA request.

NSW ‘Freedom Plan’ includes vaccine passports

A 70% vaccination rate unlocks NSW for the double-jabbed.

NSW Police Minister David Elliott confirmed plans to partially re-open NSW when vaccination rates reach 70%.

This comes along with the controversial news that bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants, and gyms will require vaccine passports as a condition of entry.

Venues would only be allowed to admit customers who could produce a commonwealth-assigned vaccination certificate synchronised with Medicare records.

“It makes sense, it makes perfect sense, it’s exactly what the British government has done,” Elliott told Sunrise on Friday morning. “This is something that a lot of people have been working very hard towards.”

Domestic vaccine passports have been the cause of major protests overseas. Crowds have been gathering every few days in European capitals to protest governments that attempt any form of medical segregation.

“We’ve got to make sure that we continue urging people to get the vaccine – and I can tell you that as member for a western Sydney electorate, the best way to motivate my constituents to get the vaccine is to tell them they’ll be able to go to the pub soon,” continued Elliott.

This comes despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison previously promising Australians that they would be offered incentives – not punishments – when it came to taking the vaccine.

UPDATE: Growing number of Canadian universities, colleges make COVID-19 vaccine mandatory

​​A steadily-growing number of Canadian universities and colleges have announced mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policies for all staff, students and visitors who will be attending campus this fall.

This comes as the provincial governments of Ontario and New Brunswick have announced mandatory vaccination policies for their public sectors, and as the federal government has announced that it will require vaccination for all federal employees and those working in federally regulated industries such as airlines and railways.

Some postsecondary schools, such as the University of Waterloo, will allow those who are not fully vaccinated or who do not want to share their vaccination status to instead opt for regular COVID-19 testing prior to entering campus. Others, such as the University of Guelph, will only allow exemptions for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons or for specific grounds protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code.

In a show of seriousness regarding adherence to its mandate, the University of Guelph stated on its website that students “may receive a full refund” on their registration deposits “if [they] choose to withdraw from the fall 2021 semester because of the vaccination requirement.”

Australian news interrupted by strange Satan worshipping ceremony - VIDEO

A NEWSREADER on Australian news channel ABC was interrupted after a video of a satan worshipping ceremony was broadcast on-air after a segment on police dogs and horses being hurt in the line of duty.

ABC Presenter Yvonne Yong was left awkwardly staring at the camera after a clip from a satan worshipping ceremony was aired in error following a news segment on police service animals. The clip, which sees three people on stage dressed in robes with an upside-down cross, was shown in error with many questioning the origin of the clip as there were no stories linked to the clip on ABC nor have the broadcaster commented on the matter. A man is seen for two seconds before shouting "hail Satan" before the camera cuts back to Ms Yong who could do nothing but continue as if nothing had happened.

Ms Yong revealed the news that the Australian Government are seeking to introduce prison sentences for those who harm police dogs or horses.

The decision was made as a response to a dog who was stabbed in the line of duty.

But as a clip played out and as Ms Yong waited for her cue, a bizarre Satan ceremony was shown for little more than two seconds.
