The French have won more battles and wars throughout history than almost any other country, fighting off German and British tribes constantly since their nation's birth.
Just look at the words of "La Marseillaise." These people are war-like as fuck, regardless of what modern public relations/propaganda campaigns have led Americans to believe.

It was tactical, in my opinion. They were one of the only European countries to not have most major cities obliterated during that time, and they had already lost an unbelievable amount of men in the first world war.
