I don't think there's a difference between what you call Jews and heathens in Babylonian times. Those beliefs were everyone's. Abraham gave a different way with a scapegoat Ram. Jesus gives us all a different way with his ultimate sacrifice. The heathen systems are simply the ways of mankind: other for self.
