It's been that way for decades, and I've seen it happen to personal friends - give you a drug, then another expensive drug to counteract the side effects of the first, and repeat till they're selling you eight different drugs stemming from an ingrown toenail.

I've been using vet drugs for years, lot cheaper.
For example, my dentist prescribed Amoxycillin 250mg for an abscessed tooth, but instead of filling it at the drugstore, I got a bottle of 100 Amoxycillin 250mg from an aquarium and pet store for $18. The drugstore would have probably charged $20 for just 20 pills.
