The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is a now-closed nuclear power plant located south of San Clemente, California, on the Pacific coast, in Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region IV
Looks like spent fuel rods are stored on site in thin steel casks which are already showing signs of cracking. Workers are in process of moving these from the wet casks to newly constructed dry casks within the sites premises. Looks like the site will be a permanent home to nuclear waste, vulnerable to tsunamis and terrorism.
Waste has piled up at every nuclear plant in the country — regardless whether the facility is still producing electricity or not. About 80,000 metric tons of spent fuel has accumulated.
It’s the responsibility of the federal government to come up with a plan to storage nuclear waste but plans such as the Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada have never gone into operation.
Attempts to restore funding for Yucca Mountain are being made on Capitol Hill. There has also been discussion about establishing what is called “consolidated interim storage” facilities in remote areas such as southeastern New Mexico but the process can take years.
