OTD 1960, GRU Col. Oleg Penkovsky became a high-level Soviet asset for the CIA and MI6. Disillusioned with the Soviet regime, he began spying for the West and provided key information that helped defuse the Cuban missile crisis, but he was arrested & later executed by the KGB.
