Daniel Andrews warned Melbourne lockdown protesters will have 'full force of the law' thrown at them
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has labelled the anti-lockdown protest scenes in Melbourne over the weekend as "disgusting" and "ugly", insisting they "don't work" on the Delta variant.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has called out protesters for the "disgusting" and "ugly" scenes that unfolded over the weekend in Melbourne.
"Terrible scenes. Ugly scenes. And today's Monday and the virus is still here," he told reporters during Monday's COVID-19 press conference.
"Because protests however agitated however appalling, however willing, don't work on this (Delta)".
Mr Andrews said the book will be thrown at those who attended the rally and described the injuries a number of police officers suffered at the hands of protesters as "disgusting".
"They're there to keep us safe. They put themselves in harm's way every day" he said.
"Some of the scenes on Saturday were not only disgusting but they were absolutely unlawful and the full force of the law will be upon those people."
Up to four thousand protesters stormed into Melbourne's CBD for an illegal "freedom" rally as they clashed with police in ugly and chaotic scenes.
Footage shared on social media showed residents - the majority maskless - chanting "Sack Dan Andrews" as they marched down the streets.
Other videos showed children among the protesters with at least one youngster allegedly hit by capsicum spray caught up in the middle of the chaos.
Three demonstrators were arrested for allegedly assaulting police with 218 people fined $5452 each. More people are expected to be issued infringement notices in coming days.
