>law enforcement retrieving memories directly from people’s brains

Schwab and his ilk are morons. Any neuroscientist will tell you that memories cannot be located in the brain.

Disingenuous at best. Noting that memories can be evoked by stimulating certain brain cells does not therefore mean that the memory itself resides in that brain cell. Honest neuroscientists those who admit that they are no closer to solving the "Hard Problem of Consciousness" now than they ever were in the past readily admit that even the theory that memories are broken up and scattered throughout what they like to conceptualize as a biological computer (ever purposefully frag a hard disk?) is exactly that – a theory, and not a particularly compelling one at that. Moreover, the view that consciousness is merely an epiphenomenon of neurochemical activity (i.e. just "what the brain does") is nothing but a doctrine that is easily refuted by the phenomenon of neuroplasticity, where purely mental activity results in physical changes to the brain and other parts of the body. Materialism and reductionism have failed as viable worldviews. Pretending to explain where memory is "stored in the brain" with conceptual props like engrams is not equivalent to explaining it.
