FDA History

The Food and Drug Administration is the oldest comprehensive consumer protection agency in the U. S. federal government. Since 1848 the federal government has used chemical analysis to monitor the safety of agricultural products – a responsibility inherited by the Department of Agriculture in 1862 and later by the FDA.

Although it was not known by its present name until 1930, FDA’s modern regulatory functions began with the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act, a law a quarter-century in the making that prohibited interstate commerce in adulterated and misbranded food and drugs.Harvey Washington Wiley,Chief Chemist of the USDA Bureau of Chemistry, had been the driving force behind this law and headed its enforcement in the early years, providing basic elements of protection that consumers had never known before that time.

Since then, the FDA has changed along with social, economic, political and legal changes in the United States. Examining the history of these changes illuminates the evolving role that FDA has played in promoting public health and offers lessons to consider as we evaluate current regulatory challenges.

Freemason T Roosevelt Approved Wiley 1906 'Pure Food and Drugs Act'

Theodore Roosevelt is known as one of the greatest American Presidents this country has known. He was primarily known as a great conservationist and started the National Park System. He did renovations to the White House and imprinted a “can-do” attitude which helped the population face the challenges of the new 20th Century.

Among all these things, Theodore Roosevelt was also an active Mason who exemplified the spirit and brotherhood of Masonry while serving as President. He believed in Masonry until his death.

I did some research and thought I would share some of these facts with you in this Blog.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT’S MASONIC RECORD

Brother Theodore Roosevelt was initiated: January 2, 1901, Matinecock Lodge No. 806, Oyster Bay, New York. Brother and President Roosevelt visited the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania (in its present home, the Masonic Temple at One North Broad Street) on November 5, 1902, for the Celebration of the Sesqui-Centennial of Brother George Washington's Initiation into Freemasonry. Governor of New York, 1899-1901. Brother and President Roosevelt issued an Executive Order, dated, October 17, 1901 changing the name of the "Executive Mansion" to the "White House".

CDC Pressed to Acknowledge Industry Funding

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2019

A petition from advocacy groups is calling for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop claiming it does not have relationships with or accept financial support from drug manufacturers and other companies that might benefit from agency research.

The CDC has accepted millions of dollars through the CDC Foundation, according to the groups behind the petition. During fiscal years 2014 through 2018, the CDC Foundation received $79.6 million from companies like Pfizer, Biogen, and Merck. Since it was created by Congress in 1995, the nonprofit organization has accepted $161 million from corporations.

Public Citizen, Knowledge Ecology International, Liberty Coalition, Project on Government Oversight, and U.S. Right to Know filed the petition. The groups are concerned about the pharmaceutical industry’s possible undue influence on medical research and practice.

While CDC disclaimers state that the agency doesn’t accept commercial support, the CDC media office has contradicted this. “The CDC claims its public-private partnerships are synergistic and beneficial,” the petition states, “but these partnerships are incompatible with its disclaimers of no commercial support and no relationships with manufacturers of commercial products. The CDC cannot have it both ways: It must end this oxymoronic situation of defending its receipt of corporate money while simultaneously denying that it does.”

FDA NEWS RELEASE

FDA Approves First COVID-19 Vaccine

August 23, 2021

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine has been known as the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, and will now be marketed as Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12 through 15 years of age and for the administration of a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals.

“The FDA’s approval of this vaccine is a milestone as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. While this and other vaccines have met the FDA’s rigorous, scientific standards for emergency use authorization, as the first FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine, the public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality the FDA requires of an approved product,” said Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. “While millions of people have already safely received COVID-19 vaccines, we recognize that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated. Today’s milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the U.S.”

European Medicines Agency

Comirnaty is a vaccine for preventing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people aged 12 years and older.

Comirnaty contains a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA) with instructions for producing a protein from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Comirnaty does not contain the virus itself and cannot cause COVID-19.

Rockefeller joins Pfizer’s Global Centers For Therapeutic Innovation

January 26, 2011

The Rockefeller University is one of seven major research-based medical centers in New York City to join Pfizer Inc.’s Centers for Therapeutic Innovation, which aims to speed the translation of biomedical research into life-saving medicines.

The partnerships, the first of which was established last month with the University of California, San Francisco, mimic a venture capital-funded biotechnology start-up model, whereby Pfizer funds pre-clinical and clinical development programs and offers equitable intellectual property and ownership rights to support continued experimentation and exploration, as well as broad rights to publication. Investigators will have access to Pfizer’s proprietary antibody libraries and advanced research tools along with technical support. When programs are successful and advance according to the terms determined by a joint steering committee, Pfizer will grant milestone payments and royalties. In return, Pfizer will have the opportunity to potentially broaden its pipeline with novel and highly differentiated candidate drugs.

“We are very pleased to join Pfizer’s Centers for Therapeutic Innovation program, which will provide resources to Rockefeller investigators to facilitate translating their scientific discoveries into biologic agents that improve human health,” says Barry S. Coller, who is physician-in-chief of The Rockefeller University Hospital, David Rockefeller Professor and head of the Allen and Frances Adler Laboratory of Blood and Vascular Biology.

Six other New York City research-based medical centers will be part of the CTI network: New York University Langone Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medical College and Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva Hospital. Eventually, Pfizer plans to extend the network to other U.S.-based medical institutions and to Europe and Asia.
