'China's Dr Fauci' cleared of plagiarism

A TOP COVID-19 expert in China was cleared of academic misconduct on Monday after some social media posts accused him of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis published about 20 years ago.

Shanghai's Fudan University said in a statement that Zhang Wenhong's doctoral thesis met all the criteria that were required at the time of submission, although there were writing irregularities and improper literature citations in the overview section of the appendix.

However, the statement said, it "bears no effect on the scientific originality and scholarly quality of Zhang Wenhong's research and doctoral thesis."

Fudan launched an investigation on Zhang's paper on August 15, after some netizens took to China's Twitter-like platform Sina Weibo saying that Zhang's doctorate paper is suspected of academic fraud.

The netizens said Zhang cited a paper by Huang Hainan, from Qilu Institute of Technology, which was published in the Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in 1998, without quotes, notes, or an acknowledgement.

It is effectively committing genocide by forcing Uighurs into reeducation facilities and sterilizing women by force. They are also being used for forced labor.

A fire has apparently broken out at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, amid ongoing evacuation efforts. Video footage shows a cloud of smoke rising from the airport.

News of the blaze broke on Monday evening local time. Little is known about the fire’s severity or origin, but videos posted to social media show a hazy cloud of smoke rising from the airport, which has been the focal point of US and Western evacuation efforts for the past week.

The security situation at the airport remains fragile, with US and allied troops working to evacuate thousands of their own civilians and Afghan refugees from Kabul. Hours before the fire broke out, US and German troops got into a gun battle with unknown assailants, in an exchange of fire that left one Afghan soldier dead. At least 20 people have died at the airport over the past week, a NATO official told Reuters on Sunday.

Judges have restored voting rights to an estimated 55,000 people on parole or probation for a felony, according to a lawyer for the people who challenged the law that has kept them from voting.

The ruling Monday could still be appealed to a higher court by GOP lawmakers, who were defending it in court. But if that doesn’t happen, or if the ruling is upheld on appeal, then people convicted of felonies in North Carolina will regain their right to vote once they leave prison.

“Everyone on felony probation, parole or post-supervision release can now register and vote, starting today,” the challengers’ lawyer, Stanton Jones, said in a text message Monday morning after the ruling came down.
