UK: XR activists block London junction on day one of "impossible rebellion"

Crowds of Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental activists took to the streets of London on Monday, marching from Trafalgar Square to Covent Garden, to bring awareness to climate change.
A pink table structure was set up by Extinction Rebellion climate activists in Covent Garde to block one of the busiest junctions of the capital city.
Some demonstrators set up tents and laid down on the street in protest of industries such as fossil fuels and animal agriculture, with others marched through Central London, holding XR flag sand signs with slogans such as 'Time is running out, extinct is forever'.
"We've only got a few years left really to make emergency decisions on the climate, and they have to be made, so I don't feel like I've got any other choice than to be here today," said activist Jonathan on the first day of what the environmental movement has dubbed as 'impossible rebellion'.
Another activist, Rachel, claimed that she had attended the march because she believed the UK government didn't recognise how "animal agriculture contributes as much to climate change as all the transport put together."
The rally marks the first in a series of protests to be held by the environmental campaign group over the next two weeks, ahead of the Cop 26 conference, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November.

SOT, Jonathan, Activist: "Emergency funding, like we've had for COVID, but going into policies that will lower carbon in the atmosphere, we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground. I mean that's the main thing, tell the truth, emergency funding, and Extinction Rebellion is citizen assemblies."
SOT, Jonathan, Activist: "We've only got a few years left really to make emergency decisions on the climate, and they have to be made, so I don't feel like I've got any other choice than to be here today."
SOT, George Bada, Activist: "The world is under immense threat, we probably already have 1.5 degrees baked in, the reason all the world's governments are talking in terms of staying within 1.5 degrees is that everyone can see the crime against humanity that is underway already with 1.2 degrees."
SOT, Rachel, Activist: "I'm choosing to be here because I don't think the government is recognising that animal agriculture contributes as much to climate change as all the transport put together."
SOT, Rachel, Activist: "I don't think the government is very transparent about what they're investing in, whether it's animal agriculture or fossil fuels, and so I think even if people don't fully understand that, it's because it's being concealed. And if they knew the truth, and were asking the government to tell the truth, then they wouldn't be happy with it, no one would be."
SOT, Maddie, Activist: "Reduce the use of fossil fuels and use more sustainable energy sources like solar."
SOT, Maddie, Activist: "I've seen a lot of very disturbing things in the news recently, and I'm worried about the direction the planet is going in."
