The Taliban is remaining steadfast on the Aug. 31 withdrawal and announced they will not allow Afghans to leave the country during a Tuesday press conference.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid spoke to reporters Tuesday about the U.S. withdrawal deadline of Aug. 31. Despite the evacuation process ramping up, many more people still need to be evacuated, and President Joe Biden has said he’s contemplating on extending the deadline. The Taliban, however, has vowed not to let that happen.

“This was already not according to the agreement,” Mujahid said Tuesday regarding the latest deadline. “They have opportunity, they [US] have all the resources, they can take all the people that belong to them.”

The spokesman also said the Taliban will no longer allow Afghans to leave. The U.S. has so far evacuated thousands of Afghans, with a particular focus on the special immigrant visa applicants.

“We are not going to allow Afghans to leave and we will not extend the deadline. We will be deciding about this there and then,” Mujahid said.

EU more worried about Russia & China gaining from Western defeat in Afghanistan than future of country, Moscow’s FM Lavrov says

Fears in Brussels that the fall of Kabul to the Taliban is a victory for Moscow and Beijing show that the EU is obsessed with playing politics and uninterested in the fate of ordinary Afghans, Russia’s foreign minister has said.

Speaking at a press conference following talks with his Hungarian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov said it was regrettable that the bloc’s officials weren’t as preoccupied with the humanitarian situation in the country. The top diplomat turned fire on Brussels’ foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, who claimed last week that “what we cannot do is let the Chinese and Russians take control of the situation and be supporters of Kabul, and we become irrelevant.”

The comments came as a group of senior EU parliamentarians co-signed a statement declaring that they “deeply deplore the recent political, military, and moral calamity in Afghanistan.” According to them, the bloc must now urgently develop a new strategy for the region “considering that Russia and China will quickly try to fill the political vacuum.”

However, Lavrov blasted Borrell’s focus on the geopolitics of the situation, saying that “if the head of EU foreign policy thinks in this way, I feel sorry for the member states that have to hear such a philosophy and, in principle, support it.” He went on to add that “Mr. Borrell is not worried about the fact we must help the Afghans stabilize their country as soon as possible.”

“And as for this mentality that Afghanistan cannot be allowed to fall to Russia and China,” Moscow’s top envoy said, “it comes from the same place as forcing people to choose whether they are with the West or with Russia and China. It is sad if these are the people developing policy for the EU.”

While the Taliban is designated as a terrorist organization and prohibited in Russia, Moscow has hosted a delegation of its political representatives and opened bilateral ties with the group in recent weeks in an effort to facilitate a peace deal. Contacts with the militant group have also been made to facilitate security arrangements for the Russian embassy in Kabul which, unlike the US or UK embassies, has not been shuttered since the Islamist group took charge of the capital.

Earlier this month, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said that China was a welcome “friend” in its plans to rebuild the country, and called on Beijing to support economic development “as soon as possible.”

Confusion reigns as Ukrainian Foreign Ministry officials contradict each other over alleged hijacking of plane at Kabul Airport

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman has refuted a statement from his own department's second-in-command that a plane sent by Kiev to retrieve citizens from Afghanistan was hijacked by militants, causing confusion over the facts.

The situation started late on Monday when Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Yenin claimed that an aircraft that was supposed to evacuate the country's citizens from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized Kabul was hijacked by unknown assailants and, instead, took a different load of passengers to Iran.

"Our plane was hijacked," Yenin told Western-funded Hromadske TV. "Last Tuesday, we actually had our plane stolen – it flew to Iran with an unknown group of passengers on board, instead of taking Ukrainians out."

However, less than a day later, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko denied that any plane had been hijacked, stating that reports "by some media outlets" do not "correspond to reality."

According to Nikolenko, Tenin was simply explaining the "unprecedented level of difficulties that diplomats had to face in order to pull out Ukrainians."

He did not clarify where the Iranian hijacking story had come from or why the deputy minister had told the press that armed people had stolen the plane if this was indeed not the case.

Iranian officials also later refuted the story, saying that a Ukrainian plane landed in the country's Mashhad airport to refuel before continuing to Kiev.

Japanese Yakuza crime boss sentenced to death over 4 attacks in rare ruling

Japan’s Fukuoka District Court has sentenced a Kudo-kai crime syndicate boss to death for ordering a series of attacks on civilians, including a fatal shooting of a man who controlled port construction projects.

The death penalty was handed down to Satoru Nomura on Tuesday, while his second-in-command Fumio Tanoue was given a life sentence and fined 20 million yen ($182,200), after the two were convicted of murder, a coordinated attempt to murder, and weapons violations.

Both Nomura and Tanoue had denied any involvement in the four attacks at the heart of the trial: The 1998 shooting of a local fisheries cooperative boss, who had power over port construction projects; the 2012 shooting of a police officer; the stabbing of a female nurse in 2013; and a knife attack the following year on a relative of the first victim.

Prosecutors claimed that, despite no evidence directly linking the two accused to the attacks, the incidents were coordinated by the Kudo-kai – orchestrated by Nomura and signed-off by Tanoue, according to the criminal gang’s chain of command.

As none of the victims are believed to be linked to rival Yakuza gangs, authorities pushed for the death sentence for Nomura and a lengthy prison term for Tanoue.

After his sentencing, Nomura seemingly threatened the judge who delivered it, saying he would regret the move for the rest of his life.

The court ruling is believed to be the first time that a Japanese court has sentenced a Yakuza boss to death, as the country cracks down on gang activity nationwide amid declining support for the formerly more tolerated mafia.

‘Pure fear porn’: Media ‘expert’ ripped for predicting the coming of COVID-22, a much-more deadly, vax-resistant ‘super variant’

An immunologist alarmed by coronavirus strains, and the media that cited him, are accused of fear-mongering the masses into thinking a “super variant” called Covid-22 is on the way – a warning so far based on pure conjecture.

Zurich-based immunologist Dr. Sai Reddy claimed this week that the combination of existing strains of coronavirus could create a “super variant” Covid-22 in 2022. He added that we will no longer be able to rely on the currently available vaccines for protection.

“It is very likely that a new variant will emerge and that we will no longer be able to rely on vaccinations alone,” Reddy told German newspaper Blick.

According to Reddy, if Covid variants such as Beta or Gamma become more contagious or Delta – which the doctor refers to as Covid-21 even though it was first discovered in 2020 – mutates, this could create a “new phase” of the pandemic which will be “worse than what we are experiencing now.”

Reddy went on to promote getting vaccinated and receiving subsequent booster shots to help fight the virus, as this will help create antibodies. The immunologist’s claims were later published by the Sun and Insider Paper, which tweeted about the story: “ALERT: New super variant named ‘Covid-22’ could be more dangerous than Delta strain, expert warned.”

Considering Reddy’s claims were little more than conjecture, the doctor and the outlets were accused of pushing “fear porn” in an effort to stir up the public as health officials continue to promote vaccines all while warning of rising cases in the fall.

“Here we go again,” one Twitter user wrote in response to the story.

“Pure fear porn – this variant doesn't even exist yet except in the mind of the scientist being interviewed,” another added.

France Accidentally Evacuates Taliban Member Who Admits Being 'Armed Checkpoint Commander'

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid told a press conference on Tuesday that he could not confirm reports of a meeting with the CIA director, but said they are communicating with all embassies located in Kabul.

Asked about the Washington Post report of a meeting between CIA Director William Burns and de facto Taliban leader Abdul Ghani Baradar on Monday amid the US scramble to get American citizens out of Afghanistan, Mujahid said they “cannot confirm” whether such a meeting took place.

He did say, however, that the Taliban is “in communication with all embassies present in Kabul” in an effort to “maintain diplomatic relations” as they attempt to implement a new government.

There were no details on the alleged meeting with the CIA head, but the US has been rushing to meet an August 31 deadline for the evacuation of American citizens from Afghanistan, something some experts doubt can be done.

Representative Adam Schiff (D-California) called such a target “unlikely” after a classified briefing this week. The Taliban said on Tuesday they “will not extend the deadline” as it is already beyond the original deadline for leaving the country set by former president Donald Trump, who planned on the US leaving by May.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan previously said control of the airport in Kabul and the evacuation of US citizens has been a topic of discussion with the Taliban, though President Joe Biden has not considered negotiating with the Taliban himself.

“With respect to whether President Biden is likely to speak to the leadership of the Taliban, that is not in contemplation at this time,” he said.

The government of France has admitted Tuesday that it 'accidentally' evacuated a man from Afghanistan who had been a member of the Taliban. The man was subsequently detained, and is not the only one with potential terror links: "The man is believed to be close to another Afghan evacuee who is suspected of working for the Taliban, Gabriel Attal told BFM-TV."

"Both had been placed under surveillance on their arrival in France, and the man held was detained for violating the terms of this control measure," France24 reports. The security incident was revealed a day after a similar situation unfolded in the UK, where an Afghan evacuee was found to be on the country's 'no fly list'.

Likely such revelations of 'accidental' evacuations of Afghans who had links with the Taliban will only grow, given the rapid pace of civilian evacuations from Kabul airport still underway. On Monday alone US officials said a whopping 16,000 people, including Americans, had been airlifted out of the country over the prior 24 hours.

It would clearly be impossible to vet that many people and their backgrounds under the rapid and urgent Pentagon-overseen evacuation logistics at the airport.

In the case of the Taliban member who was flown into France, he had actually worked as an armed Taliban commander of a checkpoint:

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told France Info radio that he had left an area he was required to stay in for a "few minutes," insisting there had been no security lapse.

Attal said the main suspect helped in the evacuation of French people from Afghanistan "at an incredibly tense moment and probably saved lives". But he had "links with the Taliban, at some point, and this needs to be specified".

According to a ministerial document seen by AFP, he admitted his membership of the Taliban and said he had worked as the armed head of a Taliban checkpoint in Kabul.

Interestingly over a week ago French President Emmanuel Macron warned about this very scenario - and of course was widely condemned in European media for the statements.

CIA Chief Met "Secretly" With Taliban Leader On Monday

As the Biden Administration scrambles to convince the Taliban to extend the deadline for the western evacuation from Kabul - which is presently slated to conclude Aug. 31, regardless of how many Americans and Afghan collaborators remain in the country - CIA Director William Burns was dispatched to Kabul to meet with the Taliban's de facto leader, Abdul Ghani Baradar on Monday, the Washington Post reports.

The meeting marks "the highest-level encounter between the Biden Administration and the Taliban since the militant group seized Kabul for the first time since they were initially driven from the capital by American forces two decades ago.

Biden dispatched Burns likely because of his status as a veteran of America's Foreign Service (Burns is the most decorated diplomat in Biden's Cabinet). WaPo described the Biden Administration's evacuation effort as "frantic", and Biden has called the Kabul exit "one of the largest, most difficult airlifts in history."

While the CIA declined to comment on reports of the meeting, WaPo suspects the meeting focused on the impending evacuation deadline as pressure grows from America's foreign allies to strike an agreement with the Taliban to extend the deadline. Britain, France and others have complained that more time is needed, while a Taliban spokesman yesterday said the Aug. 31 deadline was a "red line" and that there would be "consequences" if troops remained in the country beyond that.

For Baradar, the meeting was imbued with a "tinge of irony", since it took place 11 years after the CIA arrested him in a joint CIA-ISI (Pakistan's intelligence service) operation that put him in prison for eight years. But after his release from prison, he served as the Taliban's chief negotiator in peace tlks with the US in Qatar which resulted in a deal with the Trump Administration.

As a close friend of the Taliban’s founding supreme leader, Mohammad Omar, Baradar is believed to hold significant influence over the Taliban rank-and-file. He helped fight off the Soviet invasion during the 1980s, and served as a governor of several provinces during Taliban rule in the 1990s.

With the eyes of the world remaining on the evacuation effort, White House Deputy Press Secretary Chris Meager said Tuesday morning that 21,600 people have been evacuated within the last 24 hours, bringing the total evacuated since Aug. 14 to 58,700.

Airbnb To House 20,000 Afghan Refugees After Biden's Botched Pullout

Airbnb on Tuesday announced that it will provide free, temporary accommodation around the world to approximately 20,000 refugees forced to flee Afghanistan in the wake of President Biden's botched military withdrawal, which allowed the Taliban to topple the government within a matter of days.

"The displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the U.S. and elsewhere is one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time," tweeted Airbnb co-founder and head of community, Ben Chesky, who added that the company couldn't do this 'without the generosity of our hosts.'

"We feel a responsibility to step up," he added.

The vacation rental company said in a statement that it would cover the costs for the initiative, while also using funds from its Refugee Fund to address the "tremendous need" due to the "fast evolving" crisis in Afghanistan, according to the Washington Post.

Since Aug. 14, the United States has evacuated about 58,700 people from Kabul, with images showing their relief and exhaustion after facing violent clashes, Taliban fighters, and chaotic scenes at Kabul airport. Within just 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, about 21,600 people were evacuated on U.S. and coalition flights.

Chesky said it was the community’s hosts offering up their residences that made the idea truly possible, and asked people to sign up to accommodate a refugee family if they wanted to help those fleeing Taliban rule.

He also said he hoped that the company’s initiative would inspire “other business leaders to do the same."

And according to the New York Times, Airbnb placed 165 refugees in housing across the US - including California, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington State.

As a flood of refugees flee Afghanistan, the European Union said it would increase its humanitarian aid to Afghanistan by over $175 million. According to the UN Refugee agency, UNHCR, there are approximately 2.5 million registered Afghan refugees who have fled the country - however, officials say the true figure is likely to be 'significantly higher.'

An estimated 30,000 Afghan refugees are reportedly headed to the United States, according to the Department of Defense.

Facebook apps responsible for nearly 50% of all online CHILD GROOMING cases during UK lockdown in 2020 – report

Facebook has been accused by a UK child protection watchdog of fuelling a spike in online grooming of children during the pandemic – with “risky design features” in Instagram and other popular apps being exploited by offenders.

In a new report, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) noted that the various Facebook-owned platforms – including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger – accounted for nearly half of some 5,441 ‘sexual communication with a child’ offences recorded by police since April 2020.

However, the charity said the actual scale of online grooming was “likely to be higher” as a result of “tech failures” by the social media giant that resulted in a drop in the removal of abuse material during the 12-month period ending in March 2021.

According to data from 42 police forces across England and Wales, Instagram was the most common site used by groomers. It was flagged by police in 32% of the crimes where a platform was identified. Since 2017, the number of cases linked to the picture- and video-sharing site has almost doubled, police data showed.

Meanwhile, Snapchat was the second most flagged platform – linked to a quarter of the cases where a platform was identified. In all, the “big four” of the Facebook apps and Snapchat were responsible for nearly 75% of all cases where the platform used for grooming was known to police.

Noting that “online child abuse is inherently preventable,” NSPCC child safety online policy head Andy Burrows told The Herald newspaper that the high figures were caused by the “inaction of social media firms” and their adoption of a “piecemeal approach … instead of taking proactive steps to make sure that their sites are safe.”

As an example of the “far easier” ways for offenders to “contact and exploit children,” Burrows noted that groomers are able to simply “refresh the page” on some of the worst-performing platforms to “get a fresh list of children to contact as a result of the site algorithmically recommending them.”

In response, Facebook said it “works quickly to find, remove and report” this “abhorrent behaviour.” It claimed that changes were made earlier this year to “block adults from messaging under-18s they are not connected with” and said it had “introduced technology that makes it harder for potentially suspicious accounts to find young people.”

Josh Duggar Attorneys Seek Dismissal of Child Pornography Charges

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Attorneys for former reality TV star Josh Duggar have filed motions seeking to dismiss child pornography charges against him.

The motions ask for the dismissal of the two charges and to suppress evidence in the case, including all statements Duggar made to investigators, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

The documents, filed Friday, allege prosecutors failed to preserve potentially exculpatory evidence and that the two acting secretaries of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at the time of the Duggar investigation weren’t properly appointed.

The motions to suppress evidence say investigators took Duggar’s cellphone before he could call his lawyer and questioned him without his lawyer present.

Duggar, who appeared in TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” was indicted in April on two counts of downloading and possessing child pornography, some of which prosecutors said depicted the sexual abuse of toddlers.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Duggar has been confined to the home of family friends who agreed to be his custodian during his release, and he is prohibited from using any Internet-accessible devices as he awaits trial.

“19 Kids and Counting” was canceled following revelations that Duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. Duggar’s parents said he had confessed and apologized.

Duggar previously apologized for a pornography addiction and cheating on his wife.

Wuhan Lab Filed Patent For Treating ‘Accidental Exposure’ To Deadly Pathogens Just 1 Month Before COVID-19 Outbreak.

Researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology filed a patent for a device treating lab personnel “accidentally exposed” to dangerous pathogens in November of 2019 – just months before the COVID-19 pandemic.

An unearthed patent application from November 15th, 2019 reveals the lab – which many scientists and government officials have identified as the source of COVID-19 – designing a tourniquet-style device to wrap around the fingers of individuals bleeding from lab accidents. The patent explicitly states the tool is designed for “when medical staff or biosafety laboratory personnel are accidentally exposed, especially wounds.”

“The invention discloses a tool for quickly binding fingers in a biosafety laboratory. The tool includes an elastic shrinkable ring, an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder arranged in the outer cylinder, and a sliding groove is provided on the cylinder wall of the outer cylinder,” the summary begins. “The invention can conveniently band the wounds of the fingers, and has the functions of slowing down blood circulation and hemostasis. Convenient for follow-up disinfection and wound treatment,” the patent application, which is pending review, continues.

Among the Wuhan Institute of Virology researchers listed on the patent are Wu Jia, who is head of laboratory safety for the Wuhan lab’s biosafety level 3 facilities, and Li Liping, the lab’s Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party Committee and Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee. Tang Hao, who has been honored as the Young Person of the Year at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and is one of the lab’s top safety managers, is also listed on the patent.

The unearthed document follows additional patents revealing the Chinese Communist Party-run lab worked with live bats despite claims suggesting otherwise. The Wuhan Institute of Virology also filed a patent in 2018 for a “carnivorism bat rearging cage” which allows bats to be “capable of healthy growth and breeding under artificial condition.” “The utility model relates to a kind of wild animals to tame breeding apparatus technical field, more particularly, to a kind of carnivorism bat Rearging cage,” the patent adds.

Taliban Vows to Help Fight Climate Change

A Taliban representative told Newsweek in an interview Monday that the jihadist organization will, if permitted, play an indispensable role on the international stage in fighting climate change, among other supposed global challenges.

The magazine discussed the potential of the Taliban, now in power as Afghanistan’s government for over a week, to receive recognition from the international community as a legitimate governing body. The Taliban is a radical Islamist terrorist organization, designated as such not only by the United States, but by nations now apparently pressuring international institutions to accept it, most prominently the government of Russia.

Taliban terrorists launched a nationwide assault on the corrupt former government in April following months of peace negotiations with that government and the United States. The terrorists, formerly in power in Afghanistan from 1996 through the U.S. invasion of the country in 2001, agreed to a deal with former President Donald Trump that would have seen American troops leave the country by May 1, 2021, in exchange for the Taliban cutting ties with international terrorists like al-Qaeda and ceasing attacks on foreign forces. President Joe Biden refused to honor the agreement, announcing in April that he would maintain a military presence in the country through September 11 — the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that triggered the Afghan War. The Taliban launched 22,000 attacks between April and July, according to Afghanistan’s now-defunct State Ministry for Peace.

The Taliban surrounded Kabul on Sunday, August 15, prompting ex-President Ashraf Ghani to abruptly flee the country. Taliban terrorists have been in charge since.

The terrorist group’s spokesmen have emphasized the use of moderate language in interviews with the public, insisting they are in the process of building an “inclusive,” but sharia-compliant, government. They have repeatedly claimed they would respect women’s rights — a far cry from the widespread human rights atrocities committed against women and girls during their first tenure and atrocities documented nationwide in the past week.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a member of the Taliban’s Cultural Commission, confirmed to Newsweek that Taliban leaders seek to instill trust in their rule in the international community, not just the Afghan people. Their ambition, Balkhi asserted, was to be welcomed among the world’s legitimate governments and offered a proper platform.

“We hope not only to be recognized by regional countries but the entire world at large as the legitimate representative government of the people of Afghanistan,” Balkhi said, “who have gained their right of self-determination from a foreign occupation with the backing and support of an entire nation after a prolonged struggle and immense sacrifices despite all odds being stacked against our people.”

Balkhi added that the Taliban generally see a “unique opportunity” to join the world in combating climate change and other international issues.

EU Prez to Member States: Host Afghan Migrants and Get Cash

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has promised financial incentives to European Union member states who take in refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan.

President Von der Leyen made the announcement after a visit to a reception centre for Afghan EU employees at the Torrejon Air Base in Spain at the weekend and called on member states to take in refugees from the country which recently fell to the Taliban.

“I call on all states that have participated in the missions in Afghanistan, Europeans and others, to allocate sufficient reception quotas so that collectively we can come to the aid of those in need of protection,” Von der Leyen said, 20 Minutes reports.

“The Commission is ready to consider the necessary budgetary means to support EU Member States that will offer to help refugees settle on their territory,” she added.

According to 20 Minutes, it is not clear how many EU member states have agreed to take in Afghan refugees and which have outright refused the offer.

While many countries have aimed at evacuating thousands of Afghans and EU nationals from the airport in Kabul, some aeroplanes have left the airport nearly completely empty.

A German Luftwaffe A-400M transport aircraft, which can seat up to 200 people, transported just seven from Kabul last week, while UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer cited NGO reports claiming that UK aircraft had also left Kabul nearly empty.

UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace later countered the claim from the opposition leader saying, “None of our planes are leaving empty. I can’t vouch for other nations, but our planes never leave empty. If we have spaces on them, we offer them up for other nations. We took out some NATO interpreters recently, we’ve taken out some people from other [European states].”

Offering cash to house migrants is not a new policy for the European Union. The bloc has spent billions of euros as a part of the migration deal with Turkey since it was enacted in 2016 and earlier this year offered the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan €3 billion (£2.5 billion/$3.6 billion) more.

Pfizer Trial Data Has No Control Group Because They Vaccinated Placebo Participants Early

Tens of thousands of people who volunteered to be in studies of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are still participating in follow-up research. But some key questions won’t be easily answered, because many people who had been in the placebo group have now opted to take the vaccine.

Even so, there’s valuable information to be had in the planned two-year follow-up studies. And that motivated Karen Mott, a 56-year-old job counselor who stuck with the continuing study.

“I’ve been taking prescription medicine for the last 25 years,” she says, referring to antiseizure drugs she takes. In order to show those drugs worked, people previously volunteered to take them when they were still experimental, “so I felt it was my way of giving back.”

Mott, who lives in the Overland Park, Kan., got a strong reaction to the second shot, so she correctly surmised she had received the Moderna vaccine, not the placebo. She was sad to read that one of the volunteers in the placebo group did die of COVID-19.

“I keep thinking about that. Why am I one of the lucky ones?” she says. “And I think that makes me feel like, I need to keep providing the information that we need.”

So, when the clinic called her in January and offered to reveal her actual vaccine status it was an easy call for her. She agreed to keep participating in the two-year follow-up study.

Participants provide periodic nose swabs and saliva samples, to see if they’ve been infected. They also give blood so scientists can better understand how the vaccine is providing protection.

Mott was one of about 650 volunteers who took the experimental Moderna vaccine at a company called Johnson County Clinical Trials in Lenexa, Kan. Dr. Carlos Fierro, who runs the study there, says every participant was called back after the Food and Drug Administration authorized the vaccine.

“During that visit we discussed the options, which included staying in the study without the vaccine,” he says, “and amazingly there were people — a couple of people — who chose that.”

He suspects those individuals got spooked by rumors about the vaccine. But everybody else who had the placebo shot went ahead and got the actual vaccine. [Because it is injection lovers who apply to take part in injection studies.] So now Fierro has essentially no comparison group left for the ongoing study.

“It’s a loss from a scientific standpoint, but given the circumstances I think it’s the right thing to do,” he says.

People signing up for these studies were not promised special treatment, but once the FDA authorized the vaccines, their developers decided to offer the shots.

Then Trump made two grotesque appointments to his new administration—Scott Gottlieb as FDA commissioner, and Alex Azar as head of Health and Human Services. Both men had heavy pharmaceutical industry connections. Azar had served as chief of US Eli Lilly, and had sat on the board of the pharma trade group, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization. Scott Gottlieb was a director at Tolero Pharmaceuticals and the giant drug company, Daiichi Sankyo. He also worked for Glaxo; and now, in 2021, after his stint as FDA commissioner, Gottlieb sits on the board of Pfizer.

Israel Mulls Shortening Vaccine Passport Validity to 6 Months for Those Who Don’t Get a ‘Booster’

Israeli health officials said that eligibility for a third vaccine might soon be open to all those over 30 and then to everyone, and the validity of the Green Pass – currently set to expire at the end of the year – might be shortened to six months after the second shot for those who don’t receive a booster.

Israel began mass vaccinating citizens over 60 with a booster on July 30, and since then 1.52 million people have received the third shot. All individuals over age 40 who have been fully inoculated for at least five months have been eligible for the jab since Friday.

In total, 5.9 million Israelis have received at least the first shot – around 58.5% of its population – with 1.08 million eligible individuals having chosen not to be vaccinated.

Of those who have not gotten vaccinated, 16% live in haredi (ultra-Orthodox) cities, 32% in Arab cities, and 53% in mixed cities (and also include residents that identify with the haredi or Arab sector).

The government is also pushing to get Israeli students inoculated as they return to school.

In interviews with Israeli TV, both Horowitz and the ministry’s director-general, Nachman Ash, said the eligibility might be extended very soon to everyone over 30.

Horowitz also said that when the booster is available to everyone, they will consider shortening the validity of the Green Pass to six months after the second shot, and renew it again after people receive a booster. At the moment all Green Passes in Israel – which grant access to several venues and activities – are valid until the end of the year.

Illinois sex ed classes to teach gender expression as early as K-2 starting next school year

Curriculum will align with the National Sex Education Standards, including study of gender expression in grades K-2 and anatomy, gender identity and sexual orientation in grades 3-5.

Starting next school year, schools in Illinois teaching sexual education lessons will start as early as kindergarten.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed Senate Bill 818, which his office said will modernize sex education standards with age-appropriate content for grades K-12.

The measure requires the Illinois State Board of Education to provide the standards for schools that teach sex education by August 2022. Schools don't need to adopt the standards unless they teach sex ed. Parents will be able to opt their children out.

The law states the curriculum will align with and be updated alongside the National Sex Education Standards. Those standards are cultivated in part by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, or SIECUS. That group has the tag line "Sex Ed for Social Change."

Among the standards for grades K-2 are defining gender expression, different kinds of families and types of sexual abuse. Grades 3-5 go into anatomy, gender identity and sexual orientation. Grades 6-8 will learn about different types of sex, different types of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Grade 9-10 will learn about the history of "reproductive justice." Grades 11-12 will learn about power and privilege within sexual relationships.

Before the measure passed in May, state Rep. Avery Bourn (R-Raymond) said it was a mistake to align the curriculum with the National Sex Education Standards from non-government groups.

"We are delegating all authority to an unaccountable national group that can change these standards at any given moment with no check at the state level or the school level," Bourne said.

Before the legislation was signed into law, parents' rights group Awake Illinois founder Shannon Adcock said it goes too far.

"On paper it sounds so noble, but in practice it's extremely worrisome and when you look at the materials that has been proposed, it is, from parents'perspective, grooming," Adcock said. "It is sexual grooming of children."

Planned Parenthood of Illinois applauded the measure. The organization said the law will provide medically accurate personal health and safety education.
