N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) restores glutathione levels throughout in the body, especially in liver and brain. The acetyl group allows cysteine to diffuse across cellular membranes without the need of the cysteine transporter, EAAT3, which is blocked by many things in western foods such as undigested dairy peptides (pasteurization), wheat gluten, and opiates.
NAC also been found effective in numerous animal as well as clinical double blind placebo controlled studies for things like:
Bipolar disorder
High cholesterol
Cancer
Opiate addiction
Liver failure due to acetaminophen toxicity
