Rainey Bethea was the last person to be publicly executed in the United States. Bethea, who confessed to the rape and murder of a 70-year-old woman named Lischia Edwards, after being convicted of her rape, was publicly hanged in Owensboro, Kentucky. Mistakes in performing the hanging and the proceeding publicity disaster contributed to the end of public executions in the United States.

The Magnifying Transmitter

This was an advanced air-core transformer intended for the wireless transmission of electrical energy. In his autobiography, Tesla regarded it as the most important of his inventions for posterity.

Vampire Heart

Pictured is the mummified heart of the vampire Auguste Delagrange. Before his demise in 1912 Delagrange was responsible for the deaths of over forty people in Southern Louisania during one of the worst outbreaks of vampirism in the United States. He was eventually identified and hunted down by a most surprising pair – a Roman Catholic priest and a voodoo man. He was tracked down and a stake was driven through his heart to make sure and his body destroyed, consigning his soul to it’s inevitable end (if you believe in that sort of thing).

SAYS IT ALL

The King and The Beggar

Pictured here is a beggar that is running beside King George V and his son, Prince Henry. Judging by this 1920 photo, you can see the beggar is wearing a medal, so there is a very high chance he is a war veteran, and now that the war is over, he has no job. Also during this time, monarchs did not physically carry any money around, so that could explain why no one can been seen giving the beggar anything.

The Nine Kings

Nine Kings in one photo, 1910

In May 1910, European royalty gathered in London for the funeral of King Edward VII. Among the mourners were nine reigning kings, who were photographed together in what very well may be the only photograph of nine reigning kings ever taken. Of the nine sovereigns pictured, four would be deposed and one assassinated in the events leading to and after World War I. Within five years, Britain and Belgium would be at war with Germany and Bulgaria. Only five of the nine kingdoms represented in the photo still exist today.
