The State Division of Occupational Safety and Health may be stepping in at one school district…PALERMO, Calif.
-
Lacey Stafford has two kids enrolled in the Palermo Union School District.
One is in kindergarten and the other is in the eighth grade.
"My biggest frustration is the kids,” Stafford said. “It is not concentrated on them learning anymore. They are fixated on if they wear their masks correctly or not. No more can you spell your name, can you do your ABCs can you count to 20. It is fixated on can you wear your mask correctly."
Stafford said she is not worried about her kids getting COVID-19.
"Even with masked up kids and vaccinated teachers, look at how many kids are on quarantine from Palermo school and being sent home," Stafford said.
The Palermo Union School District started classes on Aug. 11. Since then 5 staff and 9 students have tested positive for COVID-19.
To put it into perspective, about 25% of the district’s population is in quarantine.
Weeks before the semester started, the Palermo school board decided not to follow the state's and Cal OSHA’s masking requirements.
It reversed this decision yesterday, now requiring students to mask up.
Under Cal OSHA’S COVID-19 prevention code 3205, teachers who are unvaccinated must wear a mask.
A district staff member sent a report to Cal OSHA saying that the district is not following these requirements.
Cal Osha said it received this complaint and are now looking into it.
"I strongly believe we will get shut down again,” Stafford said. “I mean I don't see anything else in our future besides getting shut down."
Cal OSHA said after processing the complaint, it will contact the superintendent directly. The superintendent will have to explain what is going on. If Cal OSHA finds the explanation unreasonable it will do a full investigation.
