>I'm old enough to remember when food tasted better than now
that's just the Mengele Effect.
why would you ASSUME that choosing varieties of produce that "look better" would automatically reduce their nutritional value? you sound like a kook to me. maybe shop elsewhere. like a local farmers market. yes, there is shocking difference between local fresh eggs and those from egg factories. and a shocking difference in amish butter and butter from the giant corporate food factories. but produce? nah… what you perceive as a difference in taste is real, but has nothing to do with the selection of varieties for cosmetic reasons. it's due to the fact that the produce is picked LONG BEFORE it is ripe, and allowed to ripen during shipment, which can take quite a long time. THAT'S why store tomatoes don't taste like homegrown. ripe tomatoes bruise too easily during shipment. too much waste. green tomatoes do not bruise so easily. if you grew up on a farm you would recognize that today's store tomatoes taste just like homegrown tomatoes that were picked green.
has nothing to do with changing the "varieties" for cosmetic reasons.
