Flushing your dns is not THE solution, it is meant to be used AFTER you edit your HOST file, so the old DNS that is kept in temporary memory is no longer working.
Flushing is a good thing, just like it's healthy to take a good dump for your body.
I've been using Ccleaner (the free version) every day for umpteen years on my puter, and just before I shut it down, to get rid of crap and errors that accumulate, and haven't had a serious problem with software ever.
Even though most browsers say that they clear the cache automatically when they close, they really don't. Ccleaner clears the cache down to the byte.
You're almost there. Double click on the etc folder, then you will see HOST without a file extension. Right click on that, dropdown the menu to Open, click on that, and open with Notepad.
