that's the common configuration. At best you can request the VPN server to proxy dns requests for you, but if you have your DNS set to something common like 8.8.8.8 or OpenDNS or whatever, that DNS request is going out of the VPN's IP towards the DNS server. OpenVPN needs to be specifically set up to replace outgoing DNS with its own IP, but most common services don't do that.
