Dem Rep. Jeffries: Afghanistan Withdrawal Decision ‘Exactly the Right One’

During this week’s broadcast of “Sunday Night in America” on Fox News Channel, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NJ) defended President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Jeffries offered his condolences to the 13 servicemembers who were killed in the Kabul bombing but said the decision to withdraw was “exactly the right one.”

“First of all, you know, our hearts break for the tragic loss of those 13 brave members of the military who gave their life in service to this country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. I think the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan was the right one. Certainly, it has been a tumultuous few weeks, though it is important to note that more than 114,000 Americans and Afghan allies and women and vulnerable children have been evacuated over the last two weeks. That is an extraordinary accomplishment, thanks to our military and the administration. And that actually is an example of American exceptionalism as well, and that shouldn’t get lost in the totality of what we have witnessed.”

Jeffries went on to echo the Biden administration in saying it is his expectation that “every American who wants to depart will be safely withdrawn” by the August 31 evacuation deadline.

Afghan TV Show Host Surrounded By Taliban With Guns Tells Public Not To Be Afraid And Cooperate

The presenter of Afghan TV’s Peace Studio appears on video informing the Afghan public to “cooperate with it and should not be afraid” while members of the Taliban stand behind him at gunpoint.

The host of the Peace Studio TV show which airs on Kabul TV can be seen being held at gunpoint while Taliban members clad in tactical gear appear to be holding rifles and surrounding the host. The host can be seen telling his audience to “cooperate with it.”

This occurs just over one week after the Taliban seized power over Afghanistan before the U.S. was set to complete its withdrawal of troops from the area, according to The Associated Press (AP).

This is #Afghanistan’s new state TV. Deranged-looking Taliban gunmen standing behind the anchor. “Peace Studio” sign above them. Beyond Orwellian. Not just propaganda, it’s terror. Meanwhile Biden admin is (still) politely asking Taliban to show good behavior. Unconscionable. https://t.co/32dukrBXur

Lendlease warns federal government not to miss net zero carbon emissions 'opportunity' at UN climate conference in October

Property developer Lendlease has warned the federal government not to miss the opportunity to commit to cutting carbon emissions to zero by 2050 at the upcoming United Nation's climate conference in Glasgow in October.

Key points:

The Australian Institute of Company Directors has set up a local chapter of the Climate Governance Initiative

The Climate Governance Initiative advises boards on how to adapt their businesses to cope with global warming

Australia's captains of industry are calling on the Federal Government to sign up to net zero emissions by 2050 ahead of the COP26 global climate summit later this year

The call comes as Australia's company directors open a local chapter of the global Climate Governance Initiative, which aims to educate boards about overhauling their businesses to help reduce global warming.

Lendlease's chairman and Woolworths director Michael Ullmer told the ABC that companies needed clear rules so they could plan and prepare for climate change.

The global property developer has committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and has pledged to be absolutely net zero by 2040, which would mean it would not need to use carbon offsets to slash its pollution levels.

The federal government has promised to lower Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030, but it has resisted pressure to sign up to net zero by 2050

The US and the UK governments and former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon have slammed Australia for not joining other advanced economies and making the pledge.

Mr Ullmer said Australian companies were looking for certainty on carbon targets and the federal government should heed the call to sign up to net zero by 2050 before or during the UN climate change conference.

He said Australia could "eminently" achieve net zero by mid-century and it would be disappointing if Australia failed to commit to the target.

"I think it would be a missed opportunity to be honest," he said.

"I think the reality is people are just going to get on and do it and if we have the government there supporting us that would be very helpful."
