Texas Legislature Passes Election Integrity Legislation
The Republican-controlled Texas state House and Senate on Tuesday passed the final versions of the controversial voter integrity legislation, which the Democrats tried to oppose for months.
The House voted to pass the bill 80-41 with only one Republican joining the Democrats, and the Senate passed the legislation hours later with an 18-13 party-line vote. After the bill’s passage — a major victory for the Republicans — the text will now go to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) desk to be signed into law.
Abbott, in trying to pass the bill, had called two different special legislative sessions to pass the voting legislation. In July, 57 of the 66 Democrats in the House fled the state for the nation’s capital to take away the two-thirds present quorum to conduct any type of business.
“Under the House rules, two-thirds of the chamber’s members must be present to meet quorum, the number of lawmakers needed to move legislation,” The Texas Tribune noted.

The Board requests that you fill out a Public Comment card and turn it in to the Superintendent’s Assistant. Your name will be called under the appropriate agenda item or Public Comment section of the agenda. Presentations from the public are limited to two (2) minutes regarding any item that is within the Board’s subject matter jurisdiction. The Board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to 20 minutes. Please note that Government Code Section 54954.2(a) limits the ability of Board Members to respond to public comments. In addition, the Board may not take action on any item which is not on this agenda except as authorized by Government Code 54954.2. Natomas Unified is aware of the video production released this morning. We have a responsibility to create positive learning environments for all students. We continue to take that core responsibility seriously. We understand that parents and Natomas community members have expressed their concern about the contents of this video. We respect and recognize their expressions of concern. Natomas Unified, as always, will look into this matter and take any appropriate actions as necessary. District policy explicitly states “Whenever civic education includes topics that may be controversial due to political beliefs or other influences, instruction shall be presented in a balanced manner that does not promote any particular viewpoint.” That is always the expectation.
Sadly, a number of emails have come in from outside our community that express hate and threats. There is sad irony in that outsiders are expressing displeasure towards the individual teacher while also using intense vulgarity, hate speech and threats of violence.
