Spouse anon and I bought our first house (a small fixer-upper) with a realtor, and he was such a jerk. He went to the same church that we were going to at the time, so we trusted him. Big mistake.
At the closing, the State we were living in (Illinois) required a lawyer. We only paid the lawyer $300 and he did all of the work. The realtor just showed up to get his commission check. That idiot realtor was condescending and acted like he was doing us a favor helping us to find a house. What a jerk. Since we only bought a cheap fixer-upper he got a small commission check.
Ever since then I have despised realtors. We have bought two other houses since then and did a for sale by owner. Just hired a lawyer to do the closing. No realtor involved.
I could be mistaken but I thought there was talk at one time of putting the US Capitol in St. Louis, Missouri.
