End of Evangelion is a different perspective of the end of the series. It is not opposite. Expand thinking. End of series is mind. End of Evangelion is 'real', reinforcing the internal struggle for identity and purpose.
Unfortunately, as to the second portion, I am very reserved in the discussion of ancients and aliens. Much like the Alphabet of Been Sira makes further reading and interpretation into Lilith extremely difficult, the fan culture around the ancients mythos has made it very difficult to dig into the real history behind the legends. Those are likely more reliably preserved within secret societies or obscure historical works that are likely in another language.

I certainly assess the show far higher than many have seemed to grasp. Many like it, but can't put their finger on it. I see a considerable amount of play off of NGE, though.
