Sweetgreen CEO deletes post linking obesity to pandemic after criticism

Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Neman has deleted a LinkedIn post he made Tuesday that suggested that obesity is the "root cause" of health issues, including COVID-19.

"78% of hospitalizations due to COVID are Obese and Overweight people," Neman wrote. "Is there an underlying problem that perhaps we have not given enough attention to?"

The CEO wrote that "no vaccine nor mask will save us" from the virus, although he clarified that he is vaccinated and supports others getting the vaccine. "Our best bet is to learn how to best live with it and focus on overall health vs preventing infection."

Neman argued that since the coronavirus is not going anywhere anytime soon, the government should impose "health mandates" by banning or taxing unhealthy food.

"What if we made the food that is making us sick illegal?" the post read. "What if we taxed processed food and refined sugar to pay for the impact of the pandemic? What if we incentivized health?"

FTC looking into broken ice cream machines at McDonald's

McDonald’s store owners have said that the machines are difficult to repair, and require a nightly automated heat-cleaning cycle that can fail, requiring technicians to make the machines work again.

According to the Journal, the FTC wants to learn about the suppliers of the machines and whether or not restaurant employees are allowed to work on the machines.

China rips high actor pay, 'effeminate' styles

The Chinese Communist Party wants broadcasters in the country to make sure actors are more manly — and that artists are toeing the party line.

Two of China's government agencies published new guidelines Thursday slamming the entertainment industry for its wayward influence on the country's youth and for "severely polluting the social atmosphere," Reuters reported.

The party's notice — following high-profile celebrity scandals involving tax evasion and sexual assault — said penalties should be increased for actors who have participated in illegal or unethical activities and that corporations that allow such behavior should be punished as well.

Americans, Afghan commandos evacuated through secret CIA base outside Kabul: report

U.S. officials reportedly conducted a weeks-long mission last month that evacuated hundreds of American citizens, Afghan special forces and their family members through a secret CIA base outside of Kabul.

The New York Times first reported Wednesday that the CIA base was used in the U.S. military’s ongoing evacuations last month, and Politico reported that based on documents and conversations with a senior administration official, a defense official and a congressional official, the mission included U.S. citizens and at-risk Afghans, including Afghan commandos.

A U.S. official, who like the others spoke to Politico on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information, confirmed that the CIA was involved and “worked closely with other agencies to facilitate in various ways access to the airport for American citizens and Afghans at risk.”

Mainstream networks ABC and CBS nighly newscasts skip left-behind Americans in Afghanistan

Mainstream networks ABC and CBS appeared to have moved on from covering the potentially hundreds of Americans left behind in Afghanistan just one day following the withdrawal of all U.S. military personnel from the now Taliban-controlled country.

According to Grabien transcripts, and first reported by NewsBusters, during their respective Wednesday nightly news reports CBS failed to mention Afghanistan once, while ABC discussed the withdrawal's effects on soldiers who served there, but made no mention of the left-behind Americans.
