Started doing that 47 years ago. Took a cheap 20ac piece out of sagebrush that had partial water rights. (Pro tip, plant your fruit trees at the very start.)
We were nearly food independent within 2 years with gleaning from neighboring farms. Make money? No, even 5th generation farm families around here have one person working at a day job for cash flow and insurance. We have a few family/corporate farms, but they are big Mormon families who stuck together. Your odds of success go up exponentially if you're a good church goer.
