Most practicing Catholics listen to the Pope. Religious organizations have huge amounts of money and thus power.
I gave up formal religion in high school. Couldn't stand seeing all the flaming hypocrites attending services, and the clergy constantly begging for donations to help poor foreigners whose lives never seemed to improve. Said to myself it's better to practice religion by deed rather than by words or donations being wasted.
