Why so may orphans at various points in history?

Why did we have so many orphanages and workhouses filled with children, esp in UK and America (and no doubt elsewhere)?

This I suspect, has all happened so many times before, and I suspect the interval has shortened quite rapidly more recently. I'm not talking about the great cataclysms, more so the resets in between.

Step three: Bat attack

Step four: Lethal shot (doesn't have to be quick acting though, give him AIDS or one of his other creations).
