United Nations Vows To Keep Afghan Aid Flowing After Meeting With Taliban
After a meeting between top UN officials and Taliban leaders on Sunday, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar - who is expected to be Afghanistan's next president, the Taliban said the UN has vowed to keep aid flowing to the country, which ultimately means at least in part to the Taliban itself.
Representing the UN side was Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths. A Taliban spokesman said, "The UN delegation promised continuation of humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, saying he would call for further assistance to Afghanistan during the coming meeting of donor countries."
"The IEA delegation thanked the UN delegation, assuring them of cooperation and provision of needed
facilities," the spokesman Suhail Shaheen added.
The UN's Griffiths at the meeting "reiterated the humanitarian community’s commitment to deliver impartial and independent humanitarian assistance and protection to millions of people in need."
The UN also urged the Taliban to uphold gender equality and the rights of minorities: "He emphasized the critical role of women in the delivery of aid and called on all parties to ensure their rights, safety and well-being. He called for all civilians – especially women and girls and minorities – to be protected at all times. Mr. Griffiths expressed his solidarity with the people of Afghanistan," a UN statement said.
"Now more than ever, the people of Afghanistan need the support and solidarity of the international community," the UN added.
The UN statement called the humanitarian catastrophe still gripping the country after two decades of war a "grim situation" and described the future bleak outlook for children as follows: "…more than half of all children under-five are at risk of acute malnutrition as the second severe drought in four years threatens to spark further hunger in the months ahead."
The UN delegation had been invited to speak to Baradar in Kabul, also at a moment the European Union is considering reestablishing offices inside the Afghan capital for the purpose of EU-wide representation to the Taliban.

Sky News Boss Lambasts YouTube For Suspension, "Opaque" Guidelines
Claims that Sky News Australia is spreading COVID-19 misinformation are “frankly ridiculous,” according to CEO Paul Whittaker, who issued a stinging criticism of video-sharing giant YouTube, at a parliamentary inquiry on Monday.
Fronting the Standing Committee on Environment and Communications, Whittaker questioned why the Google-owned tech giant could be an arbiter of content.
“There is no expectation that our viewers agree with every opinion expressed by every host, guest, or panellist,” he said.
“But it now appears commonplace to discredit any debate on contentious issues as ‘misinformation’.”
“YouTube’s actions make clear that it is not a neutral platform, but a publisher selectively broadcasting content and censoring certain views, while allowing videos that are patently false, misogynistic, and racist to proliferate,” Whittaker said.
“Why does a tech giant, YouTube, and faceless, nameless individuals backed by an algorithm, based in California, get to decide that holding governments and decision-makers to account is ‘misinformation’? Why do they get to decide what is and isn’t allowed to be news?” he said.
The committee is investigating the state of media diversity and concentration in Australia.
The inquiry was launched following a petition spearheaded by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to investigate the influence of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.
In early August, YouTube suspended Sky News’ for one week for allegedly posting “COVID-19 misinformation,” issuing a “first strike” against the 24-hour news channel—akin to a warning under its three strikes policy.
Lucinda Longcroft, Google Australia’s director of government affairs and public policy, told the inquiry earlier that the tech giant enforced its own code on COVID-19-related content, claiming to work with health and media authorities to combat false and harmful content.
“Where there are videos that, without further context, assert that those drugs [ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine] are effective we remove them because of the danger and medical harm that could be caused to users,” Longcroft said.
Over 5,000 “dangerous and misleading” videos were traced to Australian IP addresses and removed by YouTube between February 2020 to March 2021, including 23 videos posted by Sky News.
Longcroft said Sky News’ content was removed due to violations of the code as well as two breaches of political integrity guidelines.
However, Whittaker countered by saying that it was in the public interest for alternative drugs to be discussed, especially because no vaccines were available last year.

Over 7 Million Lose Unemployment Benefits As Pandemic Programs Expire Today
While the labor picture in America has greatly improved since the American Rescue Plan was passed in March, over seven million people will lose unemployment benefits today after the expiration of federal programs meant to bolster the economy during the pandemic (and which disincentivized millions from seeking work while inflation seeped into just about every facet of life).
As we noted last week, when the ARP was passed, extending pandemic-related unemployment until today, nearly 14 million Americans depended on the programs, while job openings continued to soar.
According to the Century Foundation, 7.5 million workers receiving two federal unemployment assistance programs will be cut off from aid, Axios reports. Additionally, nearly 3 million people will lose a $300 weekly boost to their state unemployment benefits.
Overall, the US Department of Labor reported last week that 12.19 million Americans still received unemployment benefits in the week ended August 14. As we reported at the time, while the number of people receiving help through regular state programs has fallen to 2.8 million, from a peak of more than 22 million in May 2020, more than 9 million Americans still relied on aid provided through either of the two aforementioned programs, as many who lost their job during the first wave of the pandemic have exhausted their regular unemployment insurance benefits or never qualified in the first place.

The pop star was quickly called out by her followers, who accused her of engaging in “Islamophobic rhetoric” by criticizing the Burqa.
“OK !! IM NOT ISLAMOPHOIC !! I WANT WOMEN 2 HAVE THE FREEDOM 2 CHOOSE !!” Cher responded to one critic, doubling down on her previous comments which likened the burqa to a law that protects a baby from being killed.
Cher is not the only celebrity to freak out over the new law in Texas.
Left-wing celebrities including Michael Moore, Amy Schumer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dave Bautista, Alyssa Milano, and Amy Brenneman have shared similar screeds, dubbing Texas GOP lawmakers the “Texas Taliban” and accusing them of enacting “sharia” law.
Meanwhile, other celebrities such as left-wing actress Bette Midler have suggested that “all women refuse to have sex with men” in reaction to the Texas law.
“I suggest that all women refuse to have sex with men until they are guaranteed the right to choose by Congress,” the Loose Women actress tweeted.

National Archives Places ‘Harmful Language Alert’ on Page Hosting U.S. Constitution.
The webpage of the U.S. National Archives that hosts the nation’s own Constitution has a “harmful language alert” for readers at the top of the page.
The alert now appears on many pages on the archives.org website, and links to a page entitled “NARA’s Statement on Potentially Harmful Content,” which they define as:
reflect racist, sexist, ableist, misogynistic/misogynoir, and xenophobic opinions and attitudes;
be discriminatory towards or exclude diverse views on sexuality, gender, religion, and more;
include graphic content of historical events such as violent death, medical procedures, crime, wars/terrorist acts, natural disasters and more;
demonstrate bias and exclusion in institutional collecting and digitization policies.
Bizarrely, the warning does not appear on a page about Jim Crow, which has no fewer than 6 uses of the word “nggr.” Nor does it appear on a page with the word “k*ke.”

Gladys Berejiklian's legal briefings 'directly relevant' to Maguire corruption probe
The New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is pushing to keep departmental legal briefings to Premier Gladys Berejiklian under wraps because they are "directly relevant" to its widening investigation into her former secret partner Daryl Maguire.

The ICAC inquiry last year revealed Ms Berejiklian maintained a secret relationship with the former Member for Wagga Wagga for at least five years, even after he was forced to resign from Parliament for corrupt conduct.
ABC Investigations can reveal the ICAC is scrutinising written briefings that informed the Premier that two ministerial advisers had come forward to provide information in the wake of Mr Maguire's resignation from the Liberal Party in July 2018.
The confidential briefings, prepared for Ms Berejiklian by her chief legal adviser at the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC), show she was made aware the government staffers were being referred to the ICAC to make disclosures about potentially corrupt conduct.
The advice to Ms Berejiklian from the DPC's then deputy secretary and general counsel Karen Smith, who is now the state's Crown Solicitor, also stated that government ministers were legally obligated to report any reasonable suspicion of corrupt conduct under the ICAC Act.
Several NSW Upper House politicians are pushing to release the documents to the public, claiming they reveal Ms Berejiklian could have breached the Act by failing to report Mr Maguire's conduct.
But an email from the ICAC's solicitor, obtained by the ABC, says the memos should remain confidential because they are "directly relevant" to the commission's investigation.
The briefings to the Premier, dated July 23 and July 27, 2018, said two ministerial advisers had information that may be relevant to ICAC's Operation Dasha inquiry, over which Mr Maguire was forced to resign days earlier.
The Operation Dasha inquiry into Sydney's Canterbury Council exposed his attempts to seek payments to help broker property deals, and later recommended the DPP consider prosecuting him for giving false and misleading evidence.
The evidence from the government staffers helped trigger a separate ICAC inquiry into Mr Maguire, known as Operation Keppel.
The inquiry revealed last year that he had disclosed to Ms Berejiklian over several years that he was brokering deals for a network of business figures and that he had made at least one commission.
Ms Berejiklian did not report her conversations or relationship with Mr Maguire to ICAC or to Cabinet.

Videos: Israel Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against Hamas Over Latest Incendiary Balloons Batch
In mid-May, Israel and Hamas were embroiled in a fierce confrontation that lasted 11 days, ending May 20 in an Egypt-brokered ceasefire. After days of skirmishes in East Jerusalem between the Arab community and Israeli police over an Israeli court decision to expel several Palestinian families from their neighborhood, violence erupted.
The Israeli Air Force struck the territory of the Palestinian Gaza Strip in the area of Khan Younis on Monday night, local media reported, citing eyewitnesses.
According to initial reports, the target of the airstrike was likely a Hamas facility in southern Gaza. Some media speculated that the strike was in retaliation for incendiary balloons launched earlier by Palestinian militants.
After the strikes stopped, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation, saying it struck a Hamas missile development complex and a concrete construction site allegedly used for tunnels, in response to what it claimed were incendiary balloons released from Gaza that ignited three fires in southern Israel.
The IDF claimed the site which was attacked was located in a populated area, near "cultural sites, mosques and a water facility," blaming Hamas for what it says are retaliatory strikes.
Several videos emerged on social media showing the explosions and the aftermath of the airstrikes, including what appears to be heavy fire.
