The dramatic turn of events came after Murdaugh on Saturday, the day following his resignation, reported being shot in the head by the side of the road
Murdaugh called 911, then called his brother, after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting and suffering 'superficial wounds'
He was changing the tire on his car on a rural road in Hampton County when someone shot him from a passing car, according to his attorney
It is alleged that the gunman shot him after the truck initially drove past Murdaugh without incident and then made a U-turn
He was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, where he continues to receive treatment
In June, his son Paul, 22, and wife, Margaret were found shot dead at the family's hunting lodge in South Carolina. Three days later, his father, Randolph, died
Three months on, their murders remain unsolved with no arrests made
At the time Paul Murdaugh, a University of South Carolina student, was awaiting trial for the 2019 boating death of a 19-year-old woman.
