Powerful earthquake hits southern Mexico
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 has struck southern Mexico, centered northeast of Acapulco, seismologists and residents say. Shaking was felt as far away as Mexico City.
The earthquake, which struck at 8:47 p.m. local time on Tuesday, was centered near the town of Pueblo Madero. This is roughly 43 kilometers (27 miles) northeast of Acapulco, or 238 kilometers (148 mi) south of Mexico City.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, while Mexico’s seismological agency put the magnitude at 6.9. It struck about 50 kilometers below the surface, making it a shallow earthquake.
