They have to use those rear thrusters while in space to come back out of orbit and into the atmosphere.

At that point it is traveling near 25,000MPH, no?

This is why re entry angles are so important, so they don't skip across the atmosphere like a rock on a lake.

I see absolutely no reason they couldn't use them to adjust speed, altitude while in flight on approach.
