In 2019, lawmakers appropriated $54 million to reconstruct and fill the Carlsbad brine well with sand to prevent a collapse. Experts have estimated the collapse would cause more than a billion dollars in damages, swallowing up an intersection and businesses. The work is scheduled to resume this month and be complete by next spring.
