Comedian Patton Oswalt cancels Florida, Salt Lake City shows because venues won't require vaccination

Stand-up comedian and actor Patton Oswalt has canceled several upcoming shows in Florida and Salt Lake City, Utah, because the venues would not comply with his demands requiring attendees to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

Oswalt told his followers on Instagram that he made the demands for his "Patton Oswalt Live: Who's Ready To Laugh?" tour to protect his fans from the virus.

"The good news is we're keeping everyone who comes to these shows safe and healthy because the numbers are going up," he said in a video last Wednesday. "Now the bad news, of course, is there are five venues on the tour that are not complying with this."

The comedian expressed regret that the shows were canceled, saying he was looking forward to performing at Kingsbury Hall in Utah, as well as four venues in Florida.

"This difficult decision was made due to the rising numbers of COVID cases and also because I have an ego, but my ego is not big enough to think that people should die to hear my stupid comedy," Oswalt said in the video. "So hopefully, hopefully, in the future we can rebook those when sanity holds sway again. But this sucks, I was really looking forward to Florida, to Salt Lake City."

FBI releases video of suspect and new information on RNC, DNC pipe bomb investigation

The FBI requests the public to submit any information they have on the suspect.

The FBI's Washington Field Office released a new video of the suspect who placed pipe bombs outside the RNC and DNC headquarters on Jan. 5, asking the public for additional tips to aid their investigation.

On Wednesday, the FBI field office released a virtual map showing the suspect's route, complete with videos of the person at the locations along the way on the night of Jan. 5.

The FBI office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); Capitol Police; and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department are all investigating the incident.

"The FBI is extremely grateful to the American people who have already provided us with vital assistance in this case," said Steven M. D'Antuono, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Washington Field Office.

"Since January, the FBI has conducted more than 800 interviews, collected more than 23,000 video files, and assessed more than 300 tips related to this investigation. Those tips have helped us uncover new information, which we are releasing today and asking the public to view it and call us with any information you think may be relevant.

“We know it is hard to report information about a friend or family member, but these pipe bombs were viable devices that could have detonated, causing innocent bystanders to be seriously injured or killed. Your tip could be the one that prevents this person from harming themselves or anyone else," he added.

The suspect "wore a face mask, glasses, a grey hooded sweatshirt, gloves, and black and light grey Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a yellow logo" and "used a backpack to transport each of the devices," the FBI said.

Multiple Falun Gong Practitioners Die in Police Custody in China

Multiple practitioners of Falun Gong lost their lives while in police custody in China since May, according to reports from Minghui.org, a U.S.-based leading website that documents the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) persecution of Falun Gong.

The practitioners were prisoners of conscience, as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been carrying out systematic persecution against believers of Falun Gong since July 20, 1999.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient Chinese spiritual practice consisting of slow-moving meditation exercises and moral teachings that promote truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance in everyday life. Its popularity peaked in the late 1990s in China, with 70 million to 100 million adherents, according to official estimates.

On multiple occasions, the U.S. government has passed resolutions condemning the CCP’s actions and has been calling for an end to the persecution.

Death in Detention

Guo Zhenfang, a resident of Chifeng city, Inner Mongolia Province, died in police custody before arriving at a local hospital on June 9. He was held at the Songshan District Detention Center before being transferred to the hospital.

Police informed Guo’s family of his transfer. Upon arrival at the hospital, the family found that Guo’s body had a bloody nose, bruises on his buttocks, and a wound on one of his inner knees.

Multiple plainclothes police officers arrived at the hospital soon after the family got there. The officers would not allow the family to view Guo’s body any longer and ordered that his remains be transferred to a local funeral house—without the family’s consent.

Another practitioner died in police custody in Dongrulai village, Shandong Province. Police arrested Sun Peijin while he was working on his farmland on June 17.

The following day, police contacted his family and reported that Sun had passed away. His family found his skull caved in and one of his eyes missing.

Authorities claimed Sun jumped to his death from Mengyin County People’s Hospital of Shandong Province after refusing a nucleic acid test.

On June 26, police had Sun’s body cremated after coercing the family.

Wei Mingxia, 70, died after two weeks in police custody. Police arrested Wei on July 19, and imprisoned her in Huludao Detention Center.

Before being arrested, Wei was in good health, but she perished on Aug. 2. Her remains are frozen and being held in a local funeral parlor.

Police arrested another practitioner named Li Xianxi at a train station in Anyang city, Henan Province, on May 11. He was discussing the persecution of Falun Gong with travelers. Police then searched Li’s properties without warrants.

The following day, Li was placed under criminal detention at Anyang Detention Center. On June 13, police informed the family that Li had died the previous day. Family members said Li’s body was emaciated, with a swollen head and scars on his waist, back, and knees.

‘Immediately Cease’ the Persecution

State Department spokesman Ned Price called on the Chinese communist regime to “immediately cease” its long-running persecution of Falun Gong and release all adherents who have been jailed for their beliefs at a regular press briefing on July 19, a day before the 22nd anniversary of the start of Beijing’s eradication campaign against the faith group.

China’s Bot Army Incited ‘Racial Injustice’ Protests In America, CNN Admits.

A report highlighting Chinese government-backed influence campaigns on social media platforms found that the effort sought to mobilize protests against “racial injustice,” CNN has finally admitted.

The network’s summary of the recently released Mandiant Threat Intelligence and Google report notes how bot accounts linked to a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) disinformation network attempted to incite Asian Americans to protest against racism and those claiming COVID-19 originated in China.

“US officials believe the operation is linked to the Chinese government,” the article adds.

As the CNN article admits:

In April for example, experts saw thousands of fake accounts calling on Asian Americans to protest racial injustice in the US and “disinformation about the virus’ origins.” While experts found no evidence these posts were successful in mobilizing protesters, the report says “it does provide early warning that the actors behind the activity may be starting to explore, in however limited a fashion, more direct means of influencing the domestic affairs of the US.”

The report identifies how the bot network attempted to catalyze a protest on April 24th in New York City:

In April 2021, thousands of posts in languages including English, Japanese, and Korean, images, and videos were posted across multiple platforms by accounts we assess to be part of this broader activity set that called on Asian Americans to protest racial injustices in the U.S. The accounts specifically called on Asian Americans to protest on April 24 in New York City and “fight back” against the purported “rumors” caused by Dr. Li-Meng Yan, Guo Wengui, and Steve Bannon, and in some instances provided an address that they claimed Guo lived at.

Posts shared by the fake accounts included messages such as “the racism is the virus.”

“This direct call for physical mobilization is a significant development compared to prior activity, potentially indicative of an emerging intent to motivate real-world activity outside of China’s territories,” the report says.’

“While experts at Mandiant and Google say they have not seen these specific pro-Chinese accounts wade into election specific content to date, they did warn that the actors responsible could be gearing up for a more expansive disinformation push,” CNN adds. Platforms such as TikTok, however, have been used to sabotage Trump rallies during the 2020 election cycle.

The National Pulse first reported on the existence of a Beijing-backed, online bot army in early 2020, which, at the time, was used to criticize former President Donald Trump and his COVID-19 response.

More recently, over 20 advocacy groups comprising the “Stop AAPI Hate” coalition sent a letter demanding the Biden White House terminate the Department of Justice’s Trump-era “China Initiative” – which identifies and prosecutes Chinese Communist Party espionage operations – and publicly discredit the COVID-19 “lab leak” theory.

No evidence of a quid pro quo over the CCP’s attempts to bolster these campaigns digitally and the campaigns’ attempts to shift U.S. government policy on China has yet emerged.

Pro-PRC Influence Campaign Expands to Dozens of Social Media Platforms, Websites, and Forums in at Least Seven Languages, Attempted to Physically Mobilize Protesters in the U.S.

In June 2019, Mandiant Threat Intelligence first reported to customers a pro-People’s Republic of China (PRC) network of hundreds of inauthentic accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, that was at that time primarily focused on discrediting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Since then, the broader activity set has rapidly expanded in size and scope and received widespread public attention following Twitter’s takedown of related accounts in August 2019. Numerous other researchers have published investigations into various aspects of this activity set, including Google’s Threat Analysis Group, Graphika, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Stanford Internet Observatory and the Hoover Institution, and the Centre for Information Resilience.

Since we began tracking the campaign in mid-2019, we have observed multiple shifts in its tactics, many of which have been reported on publicly elsewhere, including the use of artificially generated photos for account profile pictures and the promotion of a wide variety of narrative themes related to current events, including multiple narratives related to the COVID-19 pandemic, narratives critical of Chinese dissident Guo Wengui and his associates, and narratives related to domestic U.S. political issues. However, other evolutions in the network’s activity do not appear to have been reported widely, and our aim with this blog post is to provide early warning of two significant developments that we believe are important to monitor despite the limited impact of the network so far:

The scope of activity, in terms of languages and platforms used, is far broader than previously understood. Most reporting has highlighted English and Chinese-language activity occurring on the social media giants Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. However, we have now observed this pro-PRC activity taking place on 30 social media platforms and over 40 additional websites and niche forums, and in additional languages including Russian, German, Spanish, Korean, and Japanese. While some platforms have hosted hundreds or thousands of accounts in the network, other platforms have hosted a smaller number. Collectively, these observations suggest the actors behind this campaign have significantly expanded their online footprint and appear to be attempting to establish a presence on as many platforms as possible to reach a variety of global audiences.

Accounts in the network have actively sought to physically mobilize protestors in the U.S. in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, though we have seen no indication that these attempts motivated any real-world activity. While previous public reporting has highlighted limited instances of organic engagement with the network on Twitter and we have continued to track similar instances of organic engagement on both social media and niche online forums, this direct call for physical mobilization is a significant development compared to prior activity, potentially indicative of an emerging intent to motivate real-world activity outside of China’s territories. While this attempt did not appear to achieve any success, we believe it is critical that observers continue to monitor for such attempts in case greater degrees of organic engagement are later realized by the network.

CIA Goes Woke: Uses Cat Pics, Feminist Memes To Rebrand Itself To Gen Z

The CIA wants to make young people like them more.

The Central Intelligence Agency is working to win the hearts and minds of young Americans by going woke; using cat pictures and feminist memes to rebrand itself to the likeness of Generation Z.

A report by Politico called it the agency’s “least covert mission,” critical users online are calling it the agency’s latest psychological operation. However you want to spin it, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is on social media with the goal of rallying public support from America’s youth – Generation Z.

The CIA first joined the social media platforms Facebook and Twitter in 2014, “creating one of the federal government’s quirkiest, creative, and controversial PR campaigns,” reported Politico. Their aim was to “dispel some of the negative press and conspiracy theories that have dogged the agency over the years by showing the public that CIA staffers are just like us.”

“There’s people who don’t realize that we have a softer side here,” said CIA social media team leader Candice Bryant, who has been at the agency for almost two decades. “So our audience is really the entirety of the American public.”

Now, the CIA has an Instagram account with 398,000 followers, a YouTube account with 60,000 subscribers, a Facebook account with 993,000 likes, and a Twitter account with 3.2 million followers. The agency is considering making a Tik Tok account, widely utilized by Gen-Z, but is supposedly concerned about the “Chinese risk,” according to a spokesperson.

“The team has harnessed social media tropes and hashtags including Girl Boss-y posts touting “Women Crush Wednesday,” #KnowYourValue, pumpkin spice lattes, cat photos, #TuesdayTrivia, and a recurring “Humans of CIA” series modeled on the popular “Humans of New York” photography project that went viral just over a decade ago,” the Politico report states

However, the report also notes that the CIA social media accounts do not post anything about the agencies more questionable operations; “waterboarding, drone strikes, bad WMD intelligence, failed coups, or even successful coups.”

“You want people to be able to see themselves here, not just a certain kind of person,” explained Bryant.

Peter Boghossian Resigns from Portland State to “Defend our System of Education From Those Who Seek to Destroy it”

Prof. Peter Boghossian came to world fame with the so-called “Grievance Studies Affair”, in which he managed to get a series of ridiculous “social justice” papers published in academic journals, along with his colleagues James A. Lindsay and Helen Pluckrose, on topics like “Human Reactions to Rape Culture and Queer Performativity at Urban Dog Parks in Portland, Oregon” and “The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct.”

He has taught philosophy at Portland State University for the past decade. In the letter below, sent this morning to the university’s provost and published on Bari Weiss’s Substack, he explains the reasons for his resignation.

Dear Provost Susan Jeffords,

​​I’m writing to you today to resign as assistant professor of philosophy at Portland State University.

Over the last decade, it has been my privilege to teach at the university. My specialties are critical thinking, ethics and the Socratic method, and I teach classes like Science and Pseudoscience and The Philosophy of Education. But in addition to exploring classic philosophers and traditional texts, I’ve invited a wide range of guest lecturers to address my classes, from Flat-Earthers to Christian apologists to global climate skeptics to Occupy Wall Street advocates. I’m proud of my work.

I invited those speakers not because I agreed with their worldviews, but primarily because I didn’t. From those messy and difficult conversations, I’ve seen the best of what our students can achieve: questioning beliefs while respecting believers; staying even-tempered in challenging circumstances; and even changing their minds.

I never once believed — nor do I now — that the purpose of instruction was to lead my students to a particular conclusion. Rather, I sought to create the conditions for rigorous thought; to help them gain the tools to hunt and furrow for their own conclusions. This is why I became a teacher and why I love teaching.

But brick by brick, the university has made this kind of intellectual exploration impossible. It has transformed a bastion of free inquiry into a Social Justice factory whose only inputs were race, gender, and victimhood and whose only outputs were grievance and division.

Students at Portland State are not being taught to think. Rather, they are being trained to mimic the moral certainty of ideologues. Faculty and administrators have abdicated the university’s truth-seeking mission and instead drive intolerance of divergent beliefs and opinions. This has created a culture of offense where students are now afraid to speak openly and honestly.

I noticed signs of the illiberalism that has now fully swallowed the academy quite early during my time at Portland State. I witnessed students refusing to engage with different points of view. Questions from faculty at diversity trainings that challenged approved narratives were instantly dismissed. Those who asked for evidence to justify new institutional policies were accused of microaggressions. And professors were accused of bigotry for assigning canonical texts written by philosophers who happened to have been European and male.

At first, I didn’t realize how systemic this was and I believed I could question this new culture. So I began asking questions. What is the evidence that trigger warnings and safe spaces contribute to student learning? Why should racial consciousness be thelens through which we view our role as educators? How did we decide that “cultural appropriation” is immoral?
