Have you ever observed the life cycle of a rubberband?

The life cycle includes an initial fine rubbery texture, able to expand and contract, usually to contain something such as as newspaper or the like. It suits a purpose for a fairly designed amount of time. Later on, due to environmental inequity or some such other bullshit, it no longer retains these qualities, and fails to provide it's intended purpose.

Today is here. The used up rubberband is no longer really useful and must be discarded.
