BioNTech CEO: Children aged 5 and up could be vaccinated against coronavirus in mid-October
BioNTech is to file results of clinical trials to the EMA in the coming weeks, chief Özlem Türeci said.
The first 5-year-olds could be vaccinated against COVID-19 from mid-October, according to BioNTech chief Özlem Türeci.
In an interview published today by Spiegel, Türeci said the company has completed the clinical trials and is preparing the data to file to the European Medicines Agency.
"In the coming weeks, we will present the results” to global regulators including the EMA, he said.
The EMA’s vaccines lead Marco Cavaleri told a press briefing on Thursday that the agency was expecting to receive data on 5-to-11s “at least for some of the vaccines, during the fall.”

The Libertarian Party of Washington pointed out that they were not opposed to vaccinations, but objected to the mandates.
"We are not acti-vax [sic]. We are pro-bodily autonomy," the Washington party wrote. "This is not simply about this mandate, but the precedent it sets. The line has been drawn, and the government has crossed it. We stand now with all those who believe in self ownership. #StandWithUs #MassNonCompliance."
The party's branch in Connecticut shared a photo and quote from former Representative Ron Paul, a noted Libertarian, tweeting: "Our time is now. Let not our grandchildren say we stood silent as tyranny stalked."

President Trump's endorsing his candidate to unseat Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney has swiftly cleaner the field of other hopefuls and effectively made the 2020 primary for the congressional seat a one-on-one contest.
Trump on Thursday endorsed Harriet Hageman, a former land-use attorney whose 2018 run for Wyoming governor caught the attention of state conservatives. She also has the support of former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, according to Politico.
"Bring it," Cheney, the state’s only congressional member, said after the endorsement.

Fauci also defended the vaccine rules announced by Biden, which Republican governors have promised to challenge, arguing they're "moderate" because of the option for weekly testing.
"I think the president is being somewhat moderate in his demand, if you want to call it that, in that there are some people who really don't want to get vaccinated, but they don't want to lose their job," Fauci said. "You've got to give them an off lane. … So it really is somewhat of a compromise there."
Fauci suggested he would personally be in favor of not offering this "off lane," though, saying, "Myself, I would make it just vaccinate or not, but [Biden] was trying to be moderate in what his pronouncement was."
