He graduated with honors in pedagogy with a sociopsychological address at the Faculty of Magisterium of Arezzo at the University of Siena, he served as a non-commissioned officer and, for some years, as an officer in the Guardia di Finanza. Then he moved to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, he worked in the SISDE, then part of the Italian information and security services.

Giani was a commander of a judicial police section at the Public Prosecutor's Office, also serving as a public prosecutor at the hearing, and held a senior position at the Department of Penitentiary Administration in the field of technological and organizational protection, with particular reference to the safety of those exposed to risk. Active also in the world of volunteering, following his studies he collaborated in research and held some seminars of social psychology at the universities of Arezzo and Urbino and was a lecturer at the Faculty of Investigation Science of the University of L'Aquila.On January 12, 1999, he entered the Vatican City of the State Supervisory Body and was appointed Deputy Inspector General Vicar [1]. With Italian and Vatican citizenship, among his most famous interventions is remembered to have blocked in time an Italian-Swiss town, Susanna Maiolo, in two separate attacks to Pope Benedict XVI during the Masses of Christmas Eve in the Basilica of San Pietro in 2008 and again in 2009 [3]. He coordinated and conducted the investigations in the famous case that saw the protagonist Paolo Gabriele (Vatileaks) and the second leak of news called Vatileaks 2.As Commander of the Corps, Giani has been the architect of a radical change in the structure he is dependent on, aiming at a modernization of techniques, means and procedures, as well as the professional improvement of the Vatican gendarmes. To this end, training and training courses have been prepared in collaboration with the structures of the Special Intervention Group (GIS) of the Carabinieri in Italy and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States of America. Thanks to this, a Rapid Intervention Group (GIR) was recently set up to counter any high-risk actions, including terrorist attacks targeted at the person of the Pontiff and an anti-sabotage unit.Under his command, the Vatican City State became part of Interpol on the occasion of the general assembly held in St. Petersburg on 7 October 2008.
