fwiw, those phones in the seat backs were cell phones. there was a large network of cell sites with uptilt antennas that those phones roamed on, pre-digital.
not saying that you're wrong or that they weren't or recorded, just that the technology existed for the calls to be real.
subpoena-able wiretaps weren't standardized at wireless facilities until years later.
it was possible to pass signals through recording devices, but not easily. the chances of having an 'incidental recording' from a normal telco call, imo, nil.
