Man carrying daggers and accelerants arrested at 9/11 memorial event in Apex

A man who was attending a 9/11 memorial event in Apex on Saturday morning, and was found to be carrying weapons, was taken into custody following a struggle with police officers, the Apex Police Department said.

Officers were monitoring the event when, at approximately 9:42 a.m., they observed the man walking through a crowd, carrying a backpack and wearing blue latex medical gloves, Deputy Chief Mitchell McKinney said in a news release.

When they approached the man, officers saw he was armed with two punch daggers attached to the straps of his backpack, McKinney said.

When they tried to engage the man in a conversation, officers grew concerned about his behavior and tried to detain him in handcuffs, McKinney said, but he resisted. The officers ultimately used a taser to subdue the man.

Officers then searched his backpack, which contained butane accelerants, as well as a hatchet, body armor, and shin guards, according to the release.

Police requested a K-9 to search the man's vehicle, which was located nearby at Apex United Methodist Church, but did not find any explosives inside or around the vehicle.

After they identified the man, police learned he had a history of mental health issues, and he was transported to a medical facility for evaluation, the release said.

The man's identity is being withheld "due to the medical nature of this call," police said.

Police said this was "an isolated incident associated with the suspect's mental health" and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

17 Men Arrested for Trying to Persuade Minors Into Sexual Activity After Sting Operation

The Lexington County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that 17 men were charged following a month-long mission targeting adults accused of contacting children online for sexual activity.

An 18th person is wanted on charges stemming from messages exchanged with officers posing as a minor on social media.

No child was ever used or placed in danger during the investigation, the sheriff's office said.

Law enforcement officials pretended to be underage teenagers as the suspects messaged them online or even had phone conversations. When the suspects would ask to meet "the child" in person, detectives showed up at the predetermined meeting spot to arrest them.

The messages sent by the suspects included sexually explicit language and images, according to authorities.

"The intent of these suspects during these communications is clear," Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a news release. "They were trying to persuade, entice or coerce someone they reasonably believed to be under the age of 18 to engage in sexual activity."

The youngest man arrested was 21 years old. The oldest person charged in the operation was 74.

The charges include attempted criminal sexual conduct, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted dissemination of obscene material to someone under the age of 18, and attempted promoting prostitution of a minor.

Tiananmen Massacre Vigil Organizers Arrested by Hong Kong Authorities

National-security police arrested four members of the group that for decades organized an annual vigil commemorating the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, the only such mass remembrance on Chinese soil before authorities banned it in 2020 citing pandemic restrictions on gatherings.

Police accused the group, the Hong Kong Alliance, of failing to comply with an order to hand over information as part of an investigation into allegations that the group was acting as a foreign agent. Without naming them, police said three men and a woman, aged between 36 and 57, were arrested Wednesday under the national security law.

'Stealing from the dead': Three arrested for allegedly stealing more than $45K from Surfside condo victims

Rundle announced that Betsy Alexandra Cacho Medina, 30; Rodney Choute, 38; and Kimberly Michelle Johnson, 34, were arrested and charged with schemes to defraud and identity theft. They attempted to steal an additional $67,000, Rundle said.

On Friday, Rundle announced a fourth person has been accused of stealing the identities of victims. Nelson Ronaldo Garcia-Medina, 20, was arrested Wednesday and Rundle added there could be other co-conspirators in the case.

"For most of us and most of America, this unbelievable tragedy tore at our very hearts, but for a group of alleged identity thieves, it was a time to make some money," Rundle said at the news conference.

Investigations after condo collapse: Evidence of extensive corrosion in collapsed condo

Honoring the victims: Remembering those who died in the condo building collapse in Surfside, Florida

Cacho Medina, who claimed to have survived the collapse, was identified as the lead suspect. In early July, Cacho Medina allegedly called Barclays Bank posing as Ana Ortiz, who died in the Champlain Towers South condominium. Cacho Medina requested a replacement credit card be expedited to a new address, Miami authorities said at the news conference.

Mourning the loss of her sister, Nicole Ortiz noticed email notifications on her sister's iPad, she told Florida TV station WLPG. There were notifications of changes to her sister's credit card mailing address, she said.

“They have stolen all her credit cards,” Ortiz told WLPG.

On July 9, the day of her sister's funeral, Ortiz filed a police report that led to the discovery of other identity theft victims, Rundle said at the conference.

Rundle called the defendants skilled professionals and “cyber grave robbers.” The group also stole from Ana Ortiz’s husband, Frankie Kleiman, and condo residents Gladys and Antonio Lozano, all of whom died in the collapse, according to the news conference. The other three victims were not named.

The investigation found that Cacho Medina, Johnson and Choute allegedly used counterfeit Social Security cards. Johnson and Choute also used fake drivers’ licenses, according to authorities.

Sergio Lozano told WFOR in Miami the alleged theft started July 3, the day of his parents’ funeral. He noticed money transfers, a new online bank account under his mother’s name and a request for new debit cards. He filed a report and said the crimes left his family feeling betrayed, according to WFOR.

“I don’t find a more despicable crime than stealing from the dead,” Lozano told WFOR.
