CALIFORNIA, USA — Cal Fire said that they have arrested 44 people suspected of arson in the first four months of 2021.
In a tweet Thursday, Cal Fire said that the number of arson arrests averages out to one arrest every three days.
According to a graphic, the arrests are already over a third of the total arrests for arson by Cal Fire law enforcement officers in 2020 and more than half of the total arrests the four years before that.

The California wildfires that led to ex-professor’s arson arrest
The warrant affidavit (embedded below) that was filed Aug. 8 concerning Gary Stephen Maynard, 47, mentions five fires believed to be arson, in July and August. He has been formally accused of setting just one, on Aug. 7, but his proximity to the earliest of them prompted tracking of his movements.
In addition to the approximate locations of the five fires, the map above indicates by blue dots places where the complaint says Maynard was known to be over the course of two weeks.
The first two fires, Cascade (1) and Everitt (2), began on July 20 and 21 on the southern flank of Mount Shasta. At that time, the lightning-sparked Lava Fire, which caused extensive evacuations near the city of Weed, had been burning for almost a month on the other side of the mountain.
The Cascade Fire was reported by mountain bikers who attempted to keep the flames contained for 45 minutes until firefighters arrived.
