Pakistan says three children among four civilians killed in Indian shelling

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani army said Indian shelled a district bordering Kashmir on Friday, killing four civilians including three children.

Indian troops initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Working Boundary targeting civilian population in Sialkot sector, the army said in a statement.

It said the shelling also wounded another 10 Pakistani citizens. Paramilitary Pakistani Rangers responded and targeted the Indian posts, the statement said.

No immediate comment was available from New Delhi.

Both the countries claim in full the picturesque Kashmir valley, and have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region, which they have disputed since partition and independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

Relations between the arch-rivals have been poor since the 2008 Mumbai siege, which killed 166 people, including Westerners.

Delhi blamed the Islamist militants from Pakistan for the attack.

A recent statement from ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that implied that the Islamist militants from Pakistan had crossed into the Indian business hub has created a new controversy.

India wants Hafiz Saeed, the chief of Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) - Army of the Pure - and some of his deputies to be tried in the Mumbai attack.

Pakistan says no evidence was found against Saeed, but initiated a trial against the deputies who have been bailed. The trial remains unfinished.

Top executive behind Baidu's artificial intelligence drive steps aside

BEIJING (Reuters) - Lu Qi, who oversaw Baidu Inc’s (BIDU.O) shift to artificial intelligence (AI) after a damaging ad scandal in 2016, is stepping down as chief operating officer, China’s biggest search engine said on Friday.

Lu, a former Microsoft executive and AI expert who joined Baidu in late 2016, is currently responsible for day-to-day operations in its AI unit, which has become the company’s core focus in the past year.

He will remain vice chairman of Baidu and Vice President Wang Haifeng will now oversee the company’s AI projects, Baidu said in a social media posting, adding Lu was stepping back for “personal and family reasons.”

Lu is viewed as a top figure in the global AI industry, and joined Baidu at a time when the company was rebuilding investor confidence after a medical scandal linked to its search business led to strict new regulations that gutted the firm’s ad revenue.

In speech, Pompeo to call for 'broad support' against Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will outline a “diplomatic road map” next week that he hopes will convince European and other allies to apply pressure on Iran and force it back to the negotiating table, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

Rebuffing appeals from France, Germany and Britain, U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States 10 days ago from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers, saying the agreement did not adequately curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions or address Iran’s ballistic missile program and what the Trump administration views as its destabilizing role in the region.

U.S. accuses Cameroon of 'targeted killings' of Anglophones

DAKAR (Reuters) - The United States has accused the Cameroonian government of “targeted killings”, arson and looting in its fight against an Anglophone separatist movement.

In a statement following a meeting with President Paul Biya on Thursday, the U.S. ambassador to Cameroon called for dialogue to end an 18-month-old conflict.

English-speaking rebels have killed over 20 gendarmes and tens of thousands of people, mostly English-speakers, have fled to Nigeria to escape army reprisals.

The unrest has destabilized the mostly French-speaking Central African oil producer, months before an election in which Biya will seek to extend his 35-year-old rule.

Talk about feeling like your going crazy. You ask a question of someone else and they give you an answer that has nothing to do with the question.

People who are hard of hearing tend to do this all the time.
