All i can say at this point, is that the story does not have a perfect overlay to the larger situation at large, HOWEVER… it absolutely rhymes. The concept (and technical Crime) of Stolen Valor has been around for some time. Yet more than anyone this anon had encountered before, Don has done an incredible job of bring more than just the crime itself to light. He, Don, whether intentional or not has had to shrug his own shoulders at times, because The System can not, or will not, help clamp down on this issue more directly. People like Don are left to do the best they can with limited time and resources to AT BEST make the perpetrator famous and possibly “shame” them back out of polite society. The Courts are likewise overwhelmed with so much of this stuff, that Law Enforcement can only deal with high profile or extreme cases.
Anon was aware it existed… but over the years has been somewhat STUNNED as to the widespread prevalence. Do keep in mind, there are also many cases of FALSE accusations of stolen valor, where the accused was actually what they said they were, but life itself has taken a toll and society is further confused missidentifying actual perpetrators.
This anon posits that, society at large is drowning in something very similar to the basic concept and followon issues similar to Stolen Valor. People from all walks of life, but at the moment a lot of Medical/Sciences/Pharmacological (with Media and Government), are invoking ‘special knowledge/access’ ‘you just can not understand yourself’ ‘ it’s Classified’ (rhyme) to press others into going along with what essentially is the same basic scam that Stolen Valor people try and do.
However much the military and SEALs has had a problem with this… dollars to donuts the Intel Community has it a hundred or thousand fold. And i argue it goes way the fuck up inside Government and Media.
