Mayor Gavin Newsom this morning released the following statement:

“Yesterday, I apologized privately to the Tourk family for my profound lapse of judgment. I am deeply sorry for hurting these long-time friends.

“Today, I want to apologize in public to the people of San Francisco. I made a personal mistake that I deeply regret. I let down my family, my friends, the people of San Francisco and every person who shares the agenda we have advanced these past three years.

“I humbly ask all of those I have hurt for their forgiveness.

“I will not let my personal failures impact my public duties. I believe the best way I can atone for what I have done is to focus every day on helping to make this a better city. That is what I intend to do. I hope the people of San Francisco will accept my most sincere apology and allow me the opportunity to renew their trust.”

All in the (extended) family: the Gov. Newsom story

by News-Press Staff Report April 25, 20210 comment

As for Gavin: The Los Angeles Times and Politico are believed to be investigating reports that the governor — married with four children is having a sexual affair with his Deputy Chief of Staff Lindsey Cobia, which could lead to charges of sexual harassment due to the strict legal standards that exist in California to protect employees from employers that exert control over them in the workplace. (This is not a lifestyle change for Gov. Newsom. When he was mayor of San Francisco in 2007, Gavin was exposed for having an affair with his appointments secretary, Ruby Rippey-Tourk,the wife of his close friend and campaign manager Alex Tourk. At the time, Mayor Newsom blamed his poor judgment on excessive use of alcohol and said he would seek help, but never did.)

According to the San Joaquin Valley Sun, “Gov. Gavin Newsom was engaged inmultiple alleged extramarital affairsover the course of 2020, a time where many of his orders shuttered nearly all personal and economic activity across the nation’s largest state.”

(The governor’s mask-less appearance at the ultra-expensive French Laundry restaurant after ordering everyone else in California to remain cloistered at home may be the scantiest garment of his own dirty laundry.)

Thus far, mainstream media has been shielding the governor from these salacious reports.

A former city employee who had a consensual affair with Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom when he was mayor of San Francisco said she is “doubtful” their relationship is an example that fits the #MeToo movement.

In 2007, Newsom publicly apologized for having an affair in 2005 with Ruby Rippey Gibney, who was his commission appointments secretary. At the time, she was married to Alex Tourk, Newsom’s campaign manager, and known as Ruby Rippey-Tourk. Newsom was separated from his first wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, when the affair occurred.

This week, Newsom, at the top of the polls in the race to be California’s next governor, responded to a question at a University of San Francisco appearance about what he would say to voters hesitant to vote for him because of that conduct, especially in the #MeToo era of heightened awareness of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior.

A wedding to remember / Newsom-Guilfoyle nuptials talk of the town

Among the celebrities, politicians and social luminaries who gathered in San Francisco last Saturday for the wedding of Gavin Newsom and Kimberly Guilfoyle was the pope himself.

All right, not the real pope, just Ed Asner, who flew in from Rome with his wife, Cindy, Gavin's aunt. They took a brief break from the filming of a movie in which he plays the pope to add their blessing to the nuptials.

By now, you've heard the bride, an assistant district attorney, and the groom, a county supervisor, exchanged vows before 500 guests at St. Ignatius Church and then celebrated at a lavish reception at the home of Ann and Gordon Getty, longtime friends of Gavin's father. The wedding ceremony, originally a small, private service planned for Mexico, was moved to San Francisco to make it easier for family and friends to attend.

Anthony Guilfoyle, father of the bride, beamed throughout the service, as did Gavin's parents, Tessa and retired judge William Newsom. Kimberly's mother,

the late Mercedes, was remembered at the service.

Bridesmaids were Gavin's sister, Hilary Newsom Callan, friends Cathy Johnson of Los Angeles and Kathy Brady of New York and Valerie Barreiro, an assistant D.A. from L.A.

Groomsmen were Kimberly's brother, Anthony Guilfoyle, Gavin's aide, Mike Farrah, Mark Getty and florist/business partner Stanlee Gatti.

Friends Chrissie Otis Norton, Lori Puccinelli, Julie Spanos, Charmaine DiGioia, Sharon Johal and Wendy Segall read prayers for the faithful.

With Gatti and Ann Getty at the helm, everything spelled splendor, from a gardenia-laden church to a mansion with museum-quality paintings and furniture adorned with enormous sprays of salmon-colored tulips and garlands of red roses, lemon leaves and pale hydrangeas.

In a side room, a floor was laid over a swimming pool and the space converted to a grotto with a three-piece jazz combo. An outdoor garden with marble gazebo was turned into an exotic tent made from yards of aqua-colored velvet with agold leafpattern selected by Ann.

Guests drank Pommery Champagne and ate lobster, beef, duck and chanterelles cooked by the Gettys' chef, who started preparations six days beforehand; the cake came from Torino Baking in Berkeley.

The bride wore a Vera Wang gown with crystals and a veil held in place by a diamond-studded tiara borrowed from Ann. "Tessa and Ann have made what could have been a difficult and sad time, not having my mother, a special time filled with love and support," Kimberly said.

Among the hundreds elbow-to-elbow in the home were show-woman Jo Schuman Silver, jet-setter Denise Hale, dermatologist Richard Glogau and his wife, Pam,

J.P. and Leslie Thieriot, accessories designer Summer Tompkins Walker and her architect husband, Brooks, entrepreneur Trevor Traina and his dad, John, a Faberge collector, PR woman Allison Speer and Dorka Keehn.

The couple credited the late matchmaker Art Groza for introducing them at a John Burton political fund-raiser seven years ago. They were dating others but eventually were drawn together, in part because each shared a commitment to public service.

The newlyweds spent their wedding night at the Sherman House and honeymooned in Hawaii.

And the Pope

Newsom, wife decide to end 3-year marriage/ Careers on opposite coasts take toll on mayor, TV star

Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross, Chronicle Staff Writers

Jan. 6, 2005

After months of growing rumors, it's official – San Francisco's Camelot couple are splitting up.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and his Court TV analyst wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, announced "with great sadness" the end of their 3-year-old bicoastal marriage in a brief statement issued late Wednesday by the mayor's City Hall press office.

"Unfortunately, the demands of our respective careers have made it too difficult for us to continue as a married couple," the pair said in the statement. "Over the past 10 years, we have developed a tremendous bond of love and respect for each other. That will never change.

"We will remain close friends," they said. "We ask for your understanding and consideration during this difficult time."

The announcement came after the close of business and right as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was delivering his State of the State speech – timing intended, one source said, to take as much of the spotlight off the news as possible. There was no word on when the couple intend to file divorce papers.

Neither the 37-year-old Newsom, vacationing on the big island of Hawaii, nor Guilfoyle Newsom, 35, who reportedly has returned to New York, was available for comment.

In the year since Newsom took office, he and his wife had become a media glamour couple – one magazine profile went so far as to dub them "the new Kennedys." But even as the mayor became a national figure by sanctioning same- sex marriages in the city, and Guilfoyle Newsom showed up on national TV daily during the Scott Peterson trial, signs of strain were becoming apparent.

Several friends of the couple, who would speak only on condition of anonymity for fear of alienating them, said the split came as little surprise.

"It's no secret that they have been leading separate lives," said one close friend. "She's on one coast, he's on the other – how can you make a marriage work like that?"

The friend said both are strong personalities and needed someone to be with – but Guilfoyle Newsom wasn't interested in abandoning New York, where she has a job with Court TV and makes other media appearances, and the mayor obviously is in no position to move East.

"The funny thing is, they both genuinely like each other, and they seem to get along," another friend said. "I mean, it's not like there was any anger or screaming.

"But were there problems, yes – that's pretty much been an open secret for months," the friend said.

<Mayor McHottie's

New Girlfriend – Half His Age

Democrat and Republican, liberal and conservative – they've all done it. From Newt Gingrich to Bill Clinton, Nelson Rockefeller to John McCain, politicians of all stripes have upheld one of the country's not-so-proud traditions: romancing women almost half their age.

But in our current era of political correctness and lack of privacy, that behavior has come under fire, exposing lawmakers to ridicule and sometimes leading to career-breaking scandals, such as the recent congressional imbroglio involving underage pages.

So, when the news first broke that San Francisco's popular 39-year-old mayor Gavin Newsom was dating a 19-year-old modeland restaurant hostess (she's since turned 20), the city buzzed with gossip and more than a little scuttlebutt about the City by the Bay's newest power couple.

First, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Brittanie Mountz, who played lacrosse for Sonoma State University, had suddenly changed her age on her MySpace page from 19 to 26. Then, the paper's political columnists scooped that Mountz, who is under the legal drinking age in California, was pictured holding a glass of wine at a recent gala that Newsom attended. The mayor's spokesman quickly responded that Newsom has never provided Mountz with alcohol, adding, "If she was drinking, the mayor didn't notice."
